Music For The Oceans is een concept dat in 2018 uit de grond werd gestampt in het kader van Music For Life van Studio Brussel. Het had de intentie om een éénmalig concert te organiseren waarvan de opbrengsten integraal naar de non-profitorganisatie Sea Shepherd zouden gaan. Een wereldwijde organisatie die zich inzet voor het beschermen en behouden van de oceanen en het leven erin. Op 9 december 2018 vond de allereerste editie plaats. En dankzij de fantastische bands, EBS, Het Entrepot, Stad Brugge en de vele vrijwilligers was dit een succesverhaal. Een vervolg kon dus niet uitblijven: de editie 2019 is een feit. 4 Belgische bands, 1 uit FR en 1 uit NL...zo wordt het toch min of meer een 'lokaal' feestje. We lieten hen reeds eind mei aan bod komen en nu is er ook een tweede single van hun aankomende debuut album (release 2 augustus). Deze morgen vernamen we het nieuws dat Patrick Henno onverwachts overleden is. Patrick was gekend in Oostende. Gekend als uitbater van Henno Computers, maar daarnaast zeker ook gekend door zijn passie voor muziek. Patrick was lid van de bands Out of Service en Camelrocks. Beide bands kwamen reeds verschillende malen op deze website aan bod. We wensen zijn familie en vrienden enorm veel steun in deze ongetwijfeld moeilijke dagen. LINGUA IHNOTA, Latijns voor 'onbekende taal', is de artiestenaam van Kristin Hayter, een Amerikaanse klassiek getrainde multi-instrumentaliste. CALIGULA refereert naar de wrede Romeinse keizer en het kwade dat in de hedendaagse wereld nog te vinden is. Meer specifiek gaat dit album over één specifieke gewelddadig relatie van Kristin, één van de vele. Als onze vorige review, die van Heiliug, al een rollercoaster was, dan komen we woorden te kort om dit album te omschrijven. We gaan van klassieke piano met een heerlijke vibrato stem, die haar al op jonge leeftijd in een kerkkoor deed belanden, naar zware Industrial met hevig geschreeuw, tot Doom Metal en Drone. Gezien het thema zijn de teksten veelal zwaar en duister: ”let them hate me as long as they fear me” of “who will fuck you if I won’t”. Gelukkig zit dit album vol rustpunten. Zo valt enkel IF THE POISON WONT TAKE YOU MY DOGS WILL direct met de deur in huis. SORROW SORROW SORROW begint dan weer heel dramatisch waarbij we van haar wonderbaarlijke stem kunnen genieten terwijl in de achtergrond glazen sneuvelen. Samples van seriemoordenaars passeren alsof ze haar niets kunnen schelen. DO YOU DOUBT ME TRAITOR en MAY FAILURE BE YOUR NOOSE zullen elke luisteraar nog lang bij blijven. Wraak en de ontdekking dat veel vrienden geen echte vrienden zijn, waren allicht nog nooit aanleiding tot zo iets moois. Of zoals ze het zelf omschrijven in de perskit: “CALIGULA is an outsider’s opera; magnificent, hideous, and raw”. Op 26 september live te zien in Centre Tour à Plomb. Veel vinden we nog niet terug over deze Californische Cassandra Walter. Wel dat ze ergens in 2012 een band genaamd Semi Sweet had en sinds 2015 verder ging onder de naam Girl Grave. De toon werd een stuk donkerder en de bijgaande video's steevast stijlvol, artistiek zwart-wit. In mei dit jaar bundelde ze haar songs op een 6-track EP die je HIER gratis kan downloaden! Luister ook naar: Gallows website Een woordje uitleg For Cassandra of Girl Grave, the immediate surroundings of the living world are the only truths a person can really accept. Common ideas of what happens to a life when it passes are mere aphorisms to her, and there really is no black and white explanation concerning life and death, only grey. In Cassandra’s music, the same holds true. The mood and musical color is not bright with hues of shining light, but rather smoky waves washing over the listener in a full spectrum of greyscale. Despite Cassandra’s natural tendency towards a more monochromatic artistic coloring, there still exists a delicate melodic quality of deep red equivalent to the color of spilled blood, or the haunting blue glow of the full moon, or the emerald green of a deep bottomless lagoon—all of which inevitably return to a hazy black. The combination causes the music of Girl Grave to be deeply felt. Every inflection is intensely alive with yearning and romance, visions of vivid lucid dreams, hushed desperation, cryptic passion, mixed with a shiver of futile surrender. The unspoken idea is prevalent; the things a person loves might silently simultaneously kill them too. Cassandra’s musical mood may be somber, but her compositions remain stylistically elegant, full of drama, dynamics, and self-awareness. Kindled from the literary and real-life elements around her, she explains, “A lot of times I won’t tell people how I feel, I’ll just keep everything inside. I think that’s where some of the romantic elements of the songs derive.” It is the chaotic energy of the outside world that ignites these inner conflicts that Cassandra cannot elude. She embraces the emotions that plague her, encapsulates them, and releases them in the form of song. “Music is therapeutic for me, in getting out what I maybe wanted to say to someone a long time ago—it always comes out in the music eventually.” With the aid of producer Justin Morales, Cassandra’s reveries become reality. This down-tempo dark pop band from Southern California, lead by Cassandra on vocals, guitar and keyboard, has solidified itself as not only a notable music project, but an overall artistic force.
