Gemiddeld een album per anderhalf jaar. Da’s toch best indrukwekkend. En vooral als ze dan allemaal ook nog best goed te pruimen zijn. De vijf Amerikanen die metalcore maken, komen vandaag, vrijdag 3 april 2020, met hun tiende album in vijftien jaar: Guardians.
De single die vorige week uitkwam, Paramount, is een redelijk goede afspiegeling van wat de luisteraar van het album te wachten staat. Het is een prachtige etalage waarin Brubaker en Rambler laten zien waar ze gitaar-technisch toe in staat zijn. Ze worden gedragen door de ritmesectie van Davidson en Greiner die er, vooral in dit nummer, een sport van maken om zoveel mogelijk verschillende ritmes af te wisselen. Bij elkaar vormt deze muur van geluid de basis waarop de stem van Luhrs staat als een huis.
Het nummer Defender vormt, tezamen met de titel van het album, Guardians, een al dan niet bedoeld houvast in deze klote-tijd van virus en quarantaine. Beide titels geven de luisteraar het idee dat er een bepaalde bescherming is. Die bescherming is er, figuurtlijk, ook wel wanneer je, van de buitenwereld afgesloten, op je kamertje gaat zitten luisteren naar dit album. Het zal je vermaken!
Als GGM doorgaat, hetgeen ik helaas ernstig betwijfel, en je gaat er naartoe, dan moet je echt even de moeite nemen deze gasten live te gaan zien. Je zult het niet betreuren.

Following the seminal Messengers (2007) and Constellations (2009), August Burns Red infiltrated the mainstream via 2015's Found In Far Away Places. The latter stood out as their second straight #9 bow on the US Billboard Top 200, in addition to garnering the group its first GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of " Best Metal Performance" for "Identity."
Phantom Anthem in 2017 marked the group's fourth Top 20 debut on the US Billboard Top 200, and it paved the way for their second "Best Metal Performance" GRAMMY® nod for "Invisible Enemy." The record ushered their career streams past the 100 million-mark. Between sold-out shows worldwide, ABR continues a 15-year tradition of holiday shows by launching the annual Christmas Burns Red Festival.
