Insomnium is zo'n tien jaar geleden mijn leven in geslopen. Op dat moment was ik enkel fan van powermetal of andere soorten muziek zonder zware grunts en screams. Het waren dan ook deze Finnen die mijn muzieksmaak drastisch wisten te veranderen en een hele nieuwe wereld voor mij openden. Het principe "melodic death metal" was mij in die tijd nog onbekend, maar is intussen een van mijn favoriete genres geworden. Insomnium zijn dan ook meesters van dit genre en wanneer het aankomt op tekst.

Op deze Anno. 1696 is dat niet anders. Je krijgt het ene na het andere verhaal voorgeschoteld dat op zo'n poëtische manier verwoord is, dat je bijna niet anders kan dan blijven luisteren. Het feit dat deze verhalen zijn gebaseerd op een deel van de Finse geschiedenis, maakt het geheel voor mij alleen maar mooier (ondanks de duistere aard ervan). De stijl aan de andere kant, is deze keer net iets anders voor Insomnium; minder melodisch, zwaarder, steviger, sneller... . Hoewel ik dit ook zeker en vast kan appreciëren, zijn het toch de nummers die het meest aansluiten bij hun melodische stijl waar ik geen genoeg van krijg. Dit zijn dan Starless Paths en (vooral) Lilian.

We krijgen ook nog een kleine primeur. Bij Godforsaken kan je namelijk de stem van Johanna Kurkela terug horen en dit is de allereerste keer dat er een vrouw meezingt op een Insomnium nummer. Fun fact; zij heeft eerder ook al samengewerkt met Sonata Arctica en Nightwish. Die mooie, pure stem bij deze muziek heeft wel iets hoor, geeft een beetje een folky vibe aan de intro, al verdwijnt die weer even snel wanneer de stevige gitaren binnenkomen.

Het is in elk geval weer een prachtig staaltje muziek wat Insomnium ons hier voorschotelt, onder de vorm van een album bestaande uit acht nummers. Je denkt dan waarschijnlijk: "da's precies nie zoveel", maar vergis je niet! Met deze Anno. 1696 ben je een vijftig minuten zoet. Oorspronkelijk waren er zelfs elf nummers, maar omdat het geheel dan een beetje uit de hand zou lopen, hebben ze van de drie extra tracks een aparte EP gemaakt. At its strongest, music is a gateway into another world. The key to a gate nothing else can pry open. Music, essentially, is a weapon to destroy the walls we built around us – and Finnish metal melancholists INSOMNIUM are amongst its strongest wielders. Their ninth masterpiece, “Anno 1696”, leads us deep into a dark and troublesome past in Northern Europe, a time of witches, of superstition, of bloodlust and frenzy. And of werewolves. This time around, INSOMNIUM take us into a world woven of sorrow and last crumbling vestiges of hope, of wrath and morbid lullabies. Welcome to 1696. Welcome to hell. This is an age of unrest. The witch hunt is in full swing all across Europe and the gruesome witch trials have even reached the remote and majestic landscapes of Finland and Sweden. “The Torsåker witch trials were a horrible source of nightmarish inspiration,” Niilo Sevänen says of his ghastly muse. “All that talk about 70 women beheaded in this small Swedish parish? It’s real stuff from history!” he groans. “And as if that weren’t enough, there are also some very dark tales of cannibalism and child murder from the years of the great famine.” Stories don’t get any more metal than this.

30 percent of Finland’s population was killed during 1696 and 1697. Good times for paranoia and bloodlust. “Anno 1696” deals with this dark chapter of Finnish history while also paying tribute to the legendary Finnish novel “Sudenmorsian” by Aino Kallas, one of the only werewolf stories ever to emerge from the land of the thousand lakes. “It’s probably the single best novel ever to come from Finland,” states Sevänen. “It has this very dark and tragic tone that I wanted to capture when writing my story.” They capture it in their pure, heartfelt, visceral music as well: Never before have INSOMNIUM built apexes like these, never before have they balanced the forces of light and darkness so well. “Anno 1696” is a thundering demonstration of power, a work of art both relying on the strengths of their beloved trademark sounds and a new sense of grandiose, melancholic, aching storytelling.

And as if a stunning feat like “Anno 1696” is not enough, INSOMNIUM continue the epic story on their addendum-like EP “Songs of the Dusk”, featuring three more journeys into a dark and foggy past. „We simply had eleven great songs, and we thought that this material is too good to be ‘just’ bonus tracks,” Sevänen states. “They are part of the big story, so you can think of them as the director’s cut material that tells a little extra. For those who want to have more.”
