“Mooie quenelles van grindcore, op een bedje van black metal, geserveerd met een exquise sausje van deathmetal.” Ach…als satanische schreeuwmuziek toch eens zo mooi beschreven kon worden en dat dan iedereen zou weten hoe het klinkt. Maar ja…zo zit ons genre niet in elkaar. Wij moeten gewoon zeggen dat het fucking vet klinkt, de strot van de zanger goeie grunts voortbrengt en de band zelf verdomd goed weet hoe ze hun instrumenten moeten bespelen. Nou, bij dezen dan!
Misschien is het toeval, maar het kan bijna niet anders dan dat het zo gepland is. Ieder nummer van het nieuwe album van Icare, Khaos, is langer dan het vorige. Het album trapt af met het titelnummer, Khaos, dus. Dit nummer duurt 35 seconden. Dan is het de beurt aan Cauchemar dat na 1:09 minuut klaar is. De lijst gaat zo verder om te eindigen bij Le Dernier Souverain Du Royaume Déchu, een dat over de 20 minuten heen gaat.
Maar als we abstraheren van deze – toch wel storende – factor, kunnen we niet anders dan concluderen dat we hier te maken hebben met een goed debuutalbum. Zij die Icare kennen, zullen wellicht zeggen dat het niet het debuut is, omdat Charogne eerst is verschenen, maar dat doet er niet aan af dat Khaos toen al op de plank lag.
Icare is, zoals al zo mooi omschreven, zgn. blackened grindcore. Ze komen uit Zwitserland en ze zingen in het Frans. Voor ondergetekende is dat een obstakel. Daar waar Engelstalige grindcore soms al wel eens een probleem oplevert, qua verstaanbaarheid, is van Franstalige muziek niets meer te maken. Echter, de vibe en het gevoel van dit album zijn goed. En daar gaat het om. Zet dit album gewoon eens in je playlist en geniet ervan. Je zult niet teleurgesteld worden.

Founded in 2016, Icare is a blackened grind band from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Their initial experiments at the rehearsal studio quickly took the form of an album, which was given the title of "Khaos" and was entirely composed and recorded during their first year of existence. The band displayed an extremely virulent grindcore crawling also largely towards death and black metal sounds. But, for personal reasons, this initial effort, despite its mind blowing mastery and personality, was not intended to be performed live on stage. Therefore in 2018, the group needed new music to perform and thus composed the album "Charogne". To ensure that the stage rendering is as dark and oppressive as possible, the entire performance is contained in a single, unique 45-minutes song. Once again, the group impressed with its technicality and its visionary approach to extreme music.
Following a few concerts in 2019, Icare was signed to Division Records in early 2020. Driven by the label’s enthusiasm for their first album "Khaos", the group quickly returned to the studio to transform it into an even more accomplished version fully designed to be played live. The initial will of Icare members was to experiment with the wildest and most devastating grindcore, yet after attending a show where fellow Swiss geniuses Euclidean were playing, they were so dazzled by the dark atmosphere of the group that they decided to incorporate the dark, melodic tones and the deviance specific to black metal. "Khaos" thus unfolds like an initiatory journey on the paths of the most extreme and demanding music, after a volley of short and rabid tracks, the album subtly evolves into much longer formats, plays with moods and finally turns into a vortex of emotions mingling frank terror, ecstatic beauty and utter devastation. Inspired by Lovecraft’s universe, the album’s story mixes dystopia and science fiction to create a fantasized mythology that is both stellar and murky. The work on the visual has just added a hard and realistic dimension to the concept of the album, exposing at the same time societal taboos.
