Militarie Gun, afkomstig uit Los Angeles, profileert zich als een van de meest opvallende rockbands van zijn generatie, op het snijvlak van hardcore, indierock en powerpop. Onder leiding van zanger Ian Shelton keert het kwintet in 2025 terug met ‘God Save the Gun’, een intens en catharsisch tweede album. Het album, geschreven na drie jaar toeren en zoeken naar de juiste sound, combineert rauwe kwetsbaarheid, meeslepende melodieën en schurende gitaren. Het is geproduceerd door Riley MacIntyre (Adele, The Kills) en bevestigt het vermogen van de band om chaos en persoonlijke wonden om te zetten in massale hymnen, die zowel op plaat als op het podium even hard resoneren. De link tussen Epica en Amaranthe gaat heel ver terug. Het was in 2009 in Trix, nota bene op de verjaardag van Simone Simons dat ik Amaranthe voor het eerst aan het werk zag, toen nog als nobele onbekende in het voorprogramma van Epica. Wat een weg hebben beide bands in de jaren nadien afgelegd! Beiden hebben ze hun unieke stijl verder uitgewerkt en geperfectioneerd. Niet vreemd dus dat het momentum nu aangebroken was om samen op tournee te trekken door Europa, als gelijkwaardige acts deze keer. En die tour kan toch niet anders dan ook halt houden in België. Om een venue te vinden die groot genoeg is om al die fans te ontvangen werd er gekozen voor Vorst Nationaal. Daar vallen argumenten voor of tegen te formuleren maar ik denk het toch de juiste optie was. EPICA Afgelopen zomer stond Epica afgelopen zomer al op enkele festivals maar op een volwaardige voorstelling van het nieuwe album Aspiral (released april 2025) zaten wij hier toch nog altijd te wachten. Daar kwam vanavond gelukkig verandering in. Ruim de helft van het album werd ons voorgeschoteld. Van Apparition en Cross the Divide I als openers tot Fight to Survive in de bisnummers (maar daarover straks meer). Op muzikaal en visueel vlak was er op de show van Epica werkelijk niets aan te merken. Alles zat perfect in elkaar. Er werd gekozen voor enkele weinig eerder gespeelde songs zoals Never Enough of Tides of Time (een werkelijk zinderende vertolking van Simone hier). Maar voor het overige bijzonder weinig interactie met het publiek. En dat terwijl België toch zowat het tweede thuisland is van de band. Noch Marc, noch Isaac deden een zegje, Simone beperkte zich tot de standaard bindteksten en ook Coen, die anders veel grappiger uit de hoek kan komen leek weinig zin te hebben in het publiek. Gelukkig bracht de gevarieerde setlist de nodige schwung in het zaakje. Ook hierin vond de band het tijd om wat wijzigingen door te voeren. Geen Consign to Oblivion meer als afsluiter en de bisnummers werden uitgebreid met Fight to Survive en The Last Crusade. Op zich is het begrijpelijk dat tradities soms door elkaar moeten worden geschud. Door sommige fans zal dat misschien wat moeilijker aanvaard worden dan door anderen. AMARANTHE Amaranthe walste als een pletwals over Vorst Nationaal heen met een setlist die klonk als een Hitjukebox met een grote H. Buiten het beetje melige duet tussen Elize en Nils in Crystalline en het obligatoire Amaranthine zat er werkelijk geen moment rust in hun show. En dat was leuk. Ook al droeg het merendeel van de aanwezigen Epica shirts, toch ging letterlijk iederen ook uit het dak voor onze Zweedse vrienden. Als je drie vocalisten in de front hebt is er natuurlijk altijd wel iemand om het publiek op te jutten. Een rol die voornamelijk ook weer Nils en Elize treffelijk vertolkten. Daar zit misschien ook wel een puntje van kritiek in, want er leek nog amper ruimte voor de muzikanten in de band. Olof en Johan bleven nagenoeg heel de tijd opzij of achter de risers. Zelfs tijdens zijn geweldige solo's bleef Olof een beetje verweesd opzij staan. Hoewel Amaranthe nog een beetje teert op het album The Catalyst (2024) zijn ze toch al in volle voorbereiding om een nieuw album op ons los te laten. Het nieuwe nummer Chaos Theory dat ze ons lieten horen smaakte in elk geval al enorm lekker. CHARLOTTE WESSELS Het spijt me Charlotte. Ik vind u een hele sympathieke en lieve dame en een steengoede zangeres, maar uw solowerk glijdt gewoon van mij af. Cactusfestival heeft een nieuwe naam beet. The Afghan Whigs vieren dit jaar hun 40ste verjaardag en dat doen ze op vrijdag 10 juli in het Minnewaterpark in Brugge, meteen hun enige festivalshow op Belgische bodem in 2026. Sinds hun comeback in 2012 dropte de band rond Greg Dulli drie platen die zich met gemak kunnen meten aan ultieme cultclassic 'Gentleman' en tijdloze hit 'Debonair'. Ook op nieuwer werk blijft de unieke Afghan Whigs sound intact. Het is een sublieme combinatie van Sub Pop alt-rock met invloeden van de R&B van Motown en Stax, afgetopt met Greg Dulli's imposante stemgeluid, dat van hem een van de beste rockzangers ter wereld maakt. Greg Dulli is een graag geziene gast in het Minnewaterpark. Al twee keer speelde hij Cactusfestival - één keer met The Afghan Whigs, een weergaloos concert in 2014, en één keer naast wijlen Mark Lanegan als The Gutter Twins. En de liefde is volledig wederzijds. In hun jubileumjaar kunnen The Afghan Whigs dan ook niet ontbreken op Cactusfestival. Cactusfestival is dit jaar aan z'n 43ste editie toe. Op 21 februari organiseert vzw Different Mind voor de tweede keer MEnTALfest, een non-profit metalfestival ten voordele van het geestelijke welzijn, mindfulness, depressie, zelfmoordgedachten. De opbrengst gaat dan ook naar goede doelen die hierin gespecialiseerd zijn namelijk Tejo Izegem & Tejo Roeselare voor kids vanaf 10 jaar en jongeren tot 21 jaar. Naast een groot hart toont deze organisatie ook dat ze een goed oor hebben voor diverse stromingen in de Belgische en internationale metal, wat resulteert in een heel interessante affiche. De eerste editie van MEnTALfest was een schot in de roos, en ook deze keer zal Trax waarschijnlijk helemaal vol lopen. Twilight Force The gates are open. Their musical style is described as modern metal with a nod to the 90s. Inspiring bands are the well-known nu-metal giants like Korn and Static-X, but also the more modern descendants like While She Sleeps, BMTH and I Prevail sneak into the music. The band members are not at their experimental stage and have hit a number of big stages (Pukkelpop, Graspop, Wacken,…) with their past projects. They now hope to use the combined experience within the team to make their mark on the Belgian and Dutch scene. The Haunted Youth - de band achter Joachim Liebens - is misschien wel de grootste Belgische indierocksensatie van de afgelopen jaren. Na de release van het veelgeprezen debuutalbum 'Dawn of the Freak' en een nonstop tour, wordt binnenkort hun tweede album 'Boys Cry Too' gelost. Bij deze release, en met een exclusieve try-out in de Zwerver, zal hun nieuwe Europese Tour starten met shows in Londen, Parijs, Berlijn, Hamburg, Keulen, Madrid, Amsterdam en Brussel. Nieuwe muziek van Yellowcard voelt ironisch genoeg enorm nostalgisch. Als dat nummer dan de titel "Bedroom Posters" krijgt, is dat gevoel helemaal compleet. De track zelf werd eigenlijk in 2025 al uitgebracht op hun recentste album Better Days, maar op deze nieuwe versie krijgen ze hulp van Joel Madden (Good Charlotte). Persoonlijk ben ik wel blij dat ze op die manier Bedroom Posters nog eens extra in de kijker zetten, want ik had hun laatste album en dus ook dit nummer compleet gemist vorig jaar. Na het beluisteren van dit nummer en het bekijken van de music video, ga ik Better Days zeker ook nog eens opvissen, want dit smaakt absoluut naar meer. Wat mij vooral opviel en eigenlijk ook meteen beetpakte wanneer ik deze track hoor, zijn de 90's rapmetal vibes in de trend van Senser en Clawfinger en vroege nu-metal ingrediënten. En toch is dit zeker geen nostalgia trip, want Moodring steekt er ook nog heel wat eigentijdse metalcore en industrial elementen in. Dat maakt van deze Masochist Machine een felle, knallende track die kan tellen als visitekaartje voor hun aankomende album death fetish dat op 27 maart verschijnt via SharpTone Records. Moodring is het geesteskindje van ene Hunter Young en eigenlijk ook meer een eenmansproject dan een band. Maar volgens Young heeft hij het zelf zo het liefst. The resulting debut EP, 2021's "Showmetherealyou", resonated with a surprising number of diverse listeners. Unable to tour and unwilling to compromise, Young focused on writing and recording new music. "death fetish" is the sound of transcendence—an artist refusing to disappear, even as the light fades. For all its darkness, "death fetish" is not a surrender. It's a reclamation. It’s Young taking back control of his narrative — body failing, mind racing, still creating, still here. "I just wanted to make a dark, honest record," he says. "And if people don't like it, I don't really care. I had to do it for myself." Moodring, once a more traditional "band," now exists as something far more elusive and infinite: A vessel for transformation, a mirror for mortality, and a living testament to pain and creation.

Wajdi Riahi @ Flagey (Brussel, BE) Wajdi Riahi’s solo performance today at the Flagey Jazz Festival started as a quiet but daring journey across musical worlds. He moved seamlessly from a Bach prelude into ’Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk, treating each piece not as a monument but as living material. Giant Steps followed, stripped down yet fearless, its complexity reshaped through touch and timing rather than speed. The set closed with Nawres, a piece he usually performs in trio form, here transformed into something deeply personal. Playing piano while activating a small prop attached to his ankle, Riahi expanded the instrument’s physical and rhythmic possibilities, turning solitude into layered dialogue. Sheepdogs zijn niet meteen mijn favoriete hondenras, maar The Sheepdogs zijn wel één van mijn favoriete bands. Mijn excuses voor deze flauwe woordspeling. Ik zal (proberen) het nooit meer (te) doen. Maar nu ik misschien toch uw aandacht heb, wil ik u graag wijzen op het feit dat The Sheepdogs (de band dus) een nieuw album klaar hebben dat ze op 27 februari op ons zullen loslaten. Dat album zal Keep Out of the Storm heten en de gelijknamige track & video werden enkele dagen geleden al vrijgegeven. Ik moet zeggen, het was voor mij een groeitrack. Mijn eerste gedachte was eerder " mèh " maar na enkele luisterbeurten moet ik wel erkennen dat het een steengoede track is. De herkenbare stem van Ewan Currie klinkt hier bijzonder krachtig en ook Ricky Paquettes stijl van meegaan in de groove en dan uitpakken met een flitsende, stuwende solo komt hier volledig tot zijn recht. The Sheepdogs zijn natuurlijk een band die je live aan het werk moet zien. Daarvoor is het aan onze kant van de oceaan wel nog wachten tot het najaar. Deze video staat al een dikke week online en ik viel er een beetje en stoemelings op, maar toch wil ik hem u niet onthouden. Boulevard of Broken Dreams is één van de grootste hits van Green Day en zo'n nummer dat bijna iedereen kent. En alhoewel Solitude Within qua melodie en structuur enorm dicht bij het origineel blijft, slagen ze er toch in om er stevig hun eigen stempel op te drukken. En met alle respect voor Quincy, Jean-Paul en de anderen, maar die stempel mag met recht en reden toch volledig op het conto van Emmelie Arents en celliste Katrien De Keyser worden geschreven. Deze cover is een leuk extraatje voor fans die nu wel reikhalzend zullen beginnen uitkijken naar de opvolger voor When Kingdoms Fall (2022). Voor wie de band nog niet kent, laat dit aub een uitnodiging zijn om dat genoemde album eens een kans te geven, want deze band schrijft ook wel bijzonder mooie eigen songs. Website

Riahi, Blake, Jukič & Sumbry @ Flagey (Brussel, BE) Friday night began with a mixture of feelings — excitement, a touch of stress, and happiness. Walking through those doors again brought an instantly familiar sensation, one that settles deep inside and reminds me why this festival always feels personal. This festival was where I first photographed concerts as press, and missing last year’s edition only deepened that sense of return. Ever since, heading toward the studios carries a quiet emotional charge. Kanda where the first ones to play and set the tone of the evening. Their album, released in November, already hinted at a band thinking beyond format, but live it truly unfolds. Synaptic Umami opened the set with tasteful energy, followed by the heavy swing of King Konh. Akucia’s flute cut sharp lines through the space, Louise held everything together on bass, especially moving on Satellite of Love, while Stéphane’s compositions clearly played to the strengths of each band member. Akashadbara (The Door to Akasha) stood out as an amazing tune, though it felt a little rushed, one to return to on CD. They closed with Kung Fu Kanda, and an unnamed encore (temporarily called Kanda Number 8), that left things deliberately open. Riahi, Blake, Jukič & Sumbry followed with a set rooted in deep musical dialogue, a quartet built around distinct voices that found cohesion in mutual listening. Pianist Wajdi Riahi led with compositions shaped by tone and personality, while Seamus Blake’s saxophone brought directness and emotional phrasing, Robert Jukič’s double bass played raw and fearless, and Kweku Sumbry’s drums and African percussion added colour, freedom and rhythmic depth. Cultural Appropriation and Monsters Are Everywhere took on different shades through their interplay, Dreams Come True offered a softer, reflective moment, and Adele, dedicated to a fellow musician who writes music in a similar way related to that song, embraced repetition as intention rather than limitation, all carried by this quartet’s open, trust-fueled communication. Down in the lobby, Jazzbois ended the night reminding everyone that jazz doesn’t need a stage to hit hard. Keyboard, drums and bass guitar locked into a tight groove, turning a passing space into a listening and dancing one. Stepping back into the night, I was reminded why this festival always feels special: raw music, close rooms, and that feeling of being exactly where you’re supposed to be.
