Potverdekke zeg, zo iemand hebben we in België nog niet. Dat denk ik toch. Die krachtige, doorleefde stem die hard binnenkomt. De lyrics die je pakken en doen nadenken. Het nummer op zich dat zéér knap is opgebouwd met hier en daar een kleine verrassing. Jawel, ik meen referenties naar enkele grootheden (?) in de muziek te horen, maar ik kan er niet meteen namen op plakken. " Sten blijft trouw aan zijn stijl: oprecht, eerlijk, en zonder franjes." lees ik in de perstekst. Het kan niet beter omschreven worden. Zeker ook de eerste single Die Young beluisteren en dan verder volgen. Van mijn kant doe ik alvast mijn best. Sten nog véél meer natuurlijk. Een botsing met de muur van het leven, jezelf niet meer herkennen in de spiegel, geen idee meer hebben waar je thuishoort. Het is een rauwe en eerlijke blik op wat het betekent om te verdwalen in je eigen bestaan en daar toch muziek in te vinden.  De single werd opgenomen en geproduceerd in de studio van Guus Fluit van Floyd Records , die ook instond voor de productie en afwerking van de bijhorende videoclip. Samen brengen ze een sound die balanceert tussen melancholie en puurheid, met een ongeëvenaarde virtuositeit en passie voor gitaarspel die Sten Veiths’ handelsmerk aan het worden is.  “Where The Hell I Belong” is niet alleen een muzikale reis door emoties en identiteit, maar ook een bewijs van het uitzonderlijke gitaartalent van Sten Veiths. Persbericht We starten met de snedige disco punkrock van het Amerikaanse Gossip , ze stonden in 2006 - vlak voor hun internationale doorbraak - ook al op het Rock Herk podium. Ze krijgen het gezelschap op de Main Stage van de Brusselse hiphop van Jazz Brak en de jonge singer-songwriter Uwase , winnaar van De Nieuwe Lichting 2025. Op zaterdag krijgen we Noordkaap over de vloer. Ze spelen op Rock Herk één van de twee exclusieve festivalshows deze zomer. Avanti! Ook de Amerikaanse indierockband Blonde Redhead zakt na 24 jaar nog eens af naar Rock Herk. Net zoals de Belgen van Kids With Buns en Jean Valery , bekend van Blackwave . De nacht wordt professioneel op gang getrokken door NAFT , ze gooien met hun 4 blazers en 2 drummers olie op het dansvuur met een beukende muur van live techno- en housebeats. Met Bob Vylan heeft de club één van de strafste acts van het moment. Met een combinatie van rap, punk, rock en dance gaat het duo de Club volledig op zijn kop zetten. Ze krijgen op vrijdag het gezelschap van Ierse en Britse punkers, Sprints en Knives . Het hardere werk gaat op zaterdag verder in de vorm van de Amerikaanse post-hardcore band  La Dispute , ze krijgen er het gezelschap van Meltheads , Wiegedood en Alice Mae , winnaar van De Nieuwe Lichting 2025. Eerder werden Equal Idiots en Pothamus al aangekondigd voor dit podium. Dansbaar krijgt naast de reeds eerder aangekondigde Amber Broos het bezoek van DJ Seinfeld , Kittin , Pretty Girl dj set, Yung Singh en Portex . De Street heeft ondertussen geen introductie meer nodig.  Maria Iskariot krijgen het gezelschap van  NAG , Plexi Stad , Landrose , Kaboutertje Putlucht en de UK sensatie Gans . Eerste single Overlander had een desert vibe met fuzzy gitaarriffs en natuurlijk de heerlijke blazers. Die laatste staan, samen met funky drums, volledig op de voorgrond bij de tweede single Escape from Ptenoda City . Als een frisse wind tijdens deze broeierige vrije dag. VII verschijnt op 30 mei 2025 via Diamond West. Luister ook naar: Overlander Lees Two years after releasing the Frontier’s Edge EP, The Budos Band are returning with their first full-length since 2020’s Long in the Tooth. Titled simply VII, the new album sees them doing what they do best: laying down hypnotic, horn-spiked grooves that menace and mesmerize in equal measure.   Produced by Budos guitarist Tom Brenneck with Simon Guzmán engineering,  VII  features 11 tightly constructed new tracks that draw on the group’s wide range of influences, sounding like only The Budos can. It’s music for getting down, for nighttime drives, and for alternate headspaces — a beguiling mix of mystery and rhythm that stands with the formidable work they’ve released in their two decades of recording.   “We didn’t really go in there with a concept on  VII ,” drummer Brian Profilio says. “It was the first time in two years that we were together in a studio so we were like, ‘Let’s see what happens.’ We ended up writing 11 songs in three days.”   These 11 songs run the gamut, featuring sweaty, hard-hitting funk workouts like “Escape from Ptenoda City” alongside explorations of Turkish psych in “Night Raid” and Zambian rock in the riff-heavy “Overlander.” It continues the stylistic evolution the group began with 2014’s striking, shake-things-up album  Burnt Offering .   “It’s almost like we’ve refined the sound we were going for on  Burnt Offering ,” Brenneck says of  VII . “It’s not quite as raw.”   “That’s the genreless aspect of the band,” saxophonist Jared Tankel agrees. “We’re not Afrobeat, we’re not Ethiopian jazz. We’re not world music. We’re not really funk, we’re not soul. We’re not rock. We’re just an amalgam of all these different sounds, so things pop out in all directions when you listen.”   As usual, these songs are chopped up and splashed with the heavy horns so integral to The Budos sound, weaving melodies through the muscular rhythms and even deepening the groove when it calls for it.   “Horns can occupy a melodic space, even though it’s not a voice,” Tankel says. “They can also occupy an articulated and rhythmic space. Playing with that duality is cool.” VII  was recorded in California and serves as The Budos Band’s first full-length album on Diamond West, the independent label founded in 2023 by Tankel and Brenneck. It’s also the group’s first album to include instrumental contributions from percussionist Rich Tarrana, who previously played in the Frightnrs. All told, it succeeds in opening up some new sonic spaces while staying tethered to the intuitive, unique musicality that made them such a sensation from the jump.   “Sometimes it’s like we’re speaking some esoteric language that no one else understands except us, and we’re doing it wrong,” Brenneck says. “It’s like how the Stones tried to play the blues and they missed the mark and they made something new — everything The Budos tries to do, we do wrong, and it sounds like The Budos.” website © Don Arangio

Soms doe ik eens een optreden enkel en alleen om foto's te nemen. Ik kan zo eens zin hebben om bands te fotograferen omdat het een theatrale bedoeling zal zijn. Dit was er zo eentje. Het heeft wel iets, arriveren op een optreden, wetende dat je echt niks kent. Het was speciaal. Maar toch, op die manier besef je dat je niet perse Spotify of YouTube hoeft te hebben om eens iets nieuws te leren kennen ... Inhuman © Andy Vuylsteke / AXV Visuals Inhuman Wat een cool gevoel is het niet om ergens bands te gaan checken die je totaal niks zeggen, om dan bij de eerste een gigantische stamp te krijgen als je die bezig hoort. Dat zag ik totaal niet aankomen. Deze band startte in 2007 onder de naam Anwynn om die in 2021 te veranderen naar Inhuman. Ze brengen een mix van Septicflesh en Epica, en dat blijkt enorm goed te werken. Als ik me niet vergis is de gitariste en de bassist van death metal band Bleedskin. Het is er aan te horen. Merci om me wakker te stampen! Aeon Gods 'And the award for best outfit goes to...' Het komt echt niet vaak voor dat ik me vragen begin te stellen over bepaalde outfits als een band op het podium komt te staan. Hoeveel tijd en werk werd daar in gestopt? Ok, er gaan er wel nog zijn met even zotte kostuums. Maar ik was toch eventjes ferm onder de indruk. Respect daarvoor. Hun symfonische power metal zei me bitter weinig, al was het daarom zeker niet slecht. Het is gewoon zelden iets voor mij. Hun preseance trok nu eenmaal mijn volledige aandacht. Hun nummers over Atlantis, Babylon en andere mythologieën deden alles in ieder geval kloppen. Grotesco Karma Dit trio uit Athene brengt groteske avant-garde metal met occulte invloeden. Dit zoals we het al eens durven gewoon zijn van Griekse bands. Al was de muziek zeker in orde, ik vond het toch wel wat jammer dat dit een drietal is. Voor zo'n grootse stijl vond ik het podium er wat leeg uit zien. Als je Dying Fetus noemt, dan geraak je daar mee weg natuurlijk. Toch bracht de band een heel coole straffe set.    Imperial Age Deze Engelse symfonische band van Russische origine mocht de avond afsluiten. Imperial Age zag het levenslicht in 2012 en amper een jaar later waren ze al op tour met Epica, Paradise Lost, Finntroll, ... Ook deden ze collaboraties met Therion en Arkona. Net zoals de andere bands gaan de nummers over exotische culturen en mythologieën. Al vond ik persoonlijk dat deze band me het minst aansprak. Nu ja, elk zijn ding. Ik vond Inhuman met zijn vette death metal riffs best te pruimen. Ik zal nog totally clueless een optreden binnen vallen. Roots rock in de beste traditie van het genre, dat moet je eigenlijk live horen. Het verbaast dus niet dat deze Canadese band binnen twee weken met een live album uitpakt. Gevolgd door een reeks shows in het V.K., Duitsland, Frankrijk en Nederland. Wat mag je van The Commoners verwachten? Songs zoals o.a. The Black Crowes ze brengen, met véél energie en passie. The Way I Am is hier een perfect voorbeeld van. Live In The UK verschijnt op 16 mei 2025 via Gypsy Soul Records. Het Belgische post-doom-kwartet Hemelbestormer heeft vandaag aangekondigd dat zij op 25 juli a.s. een nieuw album zullen gaan uitbrengen dat de naam The Radiant Veil zal dragen. Ter ere van die aankondiging is vandaag ook de eerste single daarvan naar buiten gekomen, ondersteund door een onheilspellende en tot de verbeelding sprekende clip: Usil . De band zegt hierover: "'Usil', het meedogenloze en kolossale openingsnummer van The Radiant Veil , biedt zowel pure schoonheid als pure kracht, net als de zon, waarnaar het is vernoemd. Het is een epische introductie, een intense voorbode van wat nog komen gaat en het begin van een reis die je niet snel zult vergeten." As Cosemans comments: “ Our guitarist Jo has been friends with Caspian for years, so a collaboration had to come about at some point.  Philip  did a fantastic job in the studio and really managed to add his own signature. ”  Hemelbestormer are a sight to behold on stage, and with The Radiant Veil  they penetrate deeper than ever into the farthest reaches of their sonic space ethos. Afgelopen vrijdag verscheen het gloednieuwe album, Ànv , van Eluveitie op het Nuclear Blast label. We weten natuurlijk welke sound Chrigel Glanzmann uit zijn mandoline en fluit weet te toveren maar juist daardoor liggen onze verwachtingen bij elke nieuwe Eluveitie release zo hoog. En nu ik het album al een groot aantal luisterbeurten heb kunnen geven durf ik zeggen dat wat mijn verwachtingen betreft, deze toch behoorlijk goed ingelost werden. Ik kan niet wachten om de nieuwe songs live te horen. Dit Taranoias is alvast een track die weleens moeiteloos de vlam in het publiek zal weten te slaan. Dit najaar gaat Eluveitie de hort op met Arch Enemy en Amorphis, waarbij de karavaan op 4 november halt houdt in de AB in Brussel. Het voelt alweer als een hele tijd geleden dat Beast In Black nog eens nieuwe muziek uitbracht. Nu brengt de band daar gelukkig weer verandering in! Deze nieuwste, Enter The Behelit, is een samenwerking met niets minder dan Diablo! Als je een beetje bekend bent in de gaming wereld, zal die naam ongetwijfeld een belletje doen rinkelen. Verder is het weer een typisch BIB nummer met een zeer hoog dans- en energiegehalte. Stilzitten terwijl je hiernaar luistert is dus absoluut geen optie! Of dit ook betekent dat er een nieuw album aan zit te komen, is momenteel nog onduidelijk, maar we kunnen hopen natuurlijk. Chat Pile @ Trix (Antwerpen, BE) Na hun 2 shows op Roadburn mocht Trix de noise-sludge rockers van Chat Pile verwelkomen voor de start van hun tour op het Europese vaste land. Van bij de start was het duidelijk dat het hier om muziek zou draaien, niet om het visuele. Het podium was heel sober ingekleed zonder een backdrop en riser voor de drum. En de muziek sprak ook, vanaf de eerste noot werden hun songs scrupuleus over ons heen gesmeten. Gelukkig kregen we af en toe een pauze tussen de nummers om de setlist te bespreken ('Setlists are for cowards') of als Raygun Busch het publiek toesprak met zijn kennis over films gelinkt aan België.
