De zomer is op komst en daarmee ook onze jaarlijkse afspraak in de Brugse binnenstad, tijdens MOODS!. Ook dit jaar presenteren ze een mooie selectie aan muzikale toppers gespreid over vier gratis concertavonden op de Burg en vier intieme concerten op het binnenplein van het Belfort. Op vrijdag 26 juli bijten de Schotse tweelingbroers THE PROCLAIMERS de spits af op de Burg met hun folky popsongs. De dag nadien, op zaterdag 27 juli, zijn ERTEBREKERS aan de beurt. Het trio Flip Kowlier, Peter Lesage en Jeffrey Bearelle heeft met 'Crème' een nieuwe zomerse plaat uit die ze tijdens MOODS! aan het Brugse publiek komen voorstellen. Op vrijdag 2 augustus zet LES NÉGRESSES VERTES het Burgplein in vuur en vlam met hun exotische cocktail van punk, rock, jazz en wereldmuziek. Stilstaan is geen optie! Het laatste gratis Burgconcert, op zaterdag 3 augustus, neemt INTERGALACTIC LOVERS voor haar rekening. De lovers, onder leiding van frontvrouw Lara Chedraoui, mogen zich ondertussen tot 's lands beste bands rekenen en stellen ook live nooit teleur! Voor de betalende concerten op het intieme binnenplein van het Belfort tekenen DANIEL NORGREN, VILLAGERS en HYDROGEN SEA alvast present. DANIEL NORGREN brak definitief door met 'Alasbury' in 2015 en is sindsdien een van onze favoriete exportproducten uit het hoge noorden. Hij komt op donderdag 1 augustus naar Brugge. VILLAGERS bracht dit jaar een nieuw album uit, waarop de indie folk band opnieuw een mooie evolutie toont. Benieuwd hoe zich dit op het podium vertaalt, op woensdag 7 augustus. Ook HYDROGEN SEA onderging een metamorfose. De band ging van duo naar kwintet en liet de computer voor wat het was. Het resultaat is een prachtig nieuw album met een geheel nieuw instrumentarium. Chris Robinson (Brotherhood) is terug met een zesde full album sinds 2011. Servants Of The Sun verschijnt op 14 junu via Silver Arrow Records. Als we op de eerste single mogen afgaan, wordt dit hun meest directe, tot op het bot gestripte rock & roll plaat sinds Big Moon Ritual en The Magic Door. Om naar uit te kijken dus. Live op 12 juli in Paradiso en op 14 juli op Bospop te zien. Even het album voorstellen "I let my head go to a Saturday night at The Fillmore, and said, 'what's the best set we could play?'" says Robinson. "The record was conceived from that starting point. With our last couple of albums we made songs we knew we probably weren't going to play live. This time around every one of these songs will fall into the live repertoire." Bottling the CRB's pure essence into 10 new songs, 'Servants Of The Sun' bursts into the clear blue air with the funky upper atmosphere bubbling of vintage keyboards, sky-climbing guitar lines, driving rhythm and the voice of one of rock music's great singers. A gateway swings wide open to a universe that the Chris Robinson Brotherhood has been tirelessly constructing for eight years through extraordinary musicianship, epic touring and a roving, seemingly bottomless wizard's chest of sonic delights. "The best thing about the CRB after all this time is that no matter what we're going through, when there's a new piece of music that everyone is interested in, the entire band gets in there and goes for it," continues Robinson. The major themes of 'Servants Of The Sun' are experienced in a constant swirl within the CRB sound. There's the uptempo ramble and strut of "Comin' Round the Mountain" juxtaposed against the surreal on "Venus In Chrome." There's redemption through love on "The Chauffeur's Daughter" set alongside the ominous poetry of "A Smiling Epitaph." "Dice Game" is an exquisite slice of blue country, while "Let it Fall" sashays with fond homage to the slinky rhythms and stoned, but sizzling energy of Little Feat and New Orleans soul-funk. The album captures Robinson and company hurtling between the fire and mania of Saturday night and the bruises and rain-on-the-bus-window reflection of the cold Sunday morning dawn. Beyond the bullet holes, red-eyed angry angels, alchemy, praying mantises, hangovers, and all other manner of cosmic debris gone lyrically airborne—love is lost, new love is found, relationships are bent and broken by distance and time or by unrelenting proximity and timelessness. All the while, the line between autobiography and psychedelic fantasy is completely blurred. "I like to write 'scenes.' I want you to be able to storyboard these lyrics into a visual, even the abstract part of them," says Robinson. "We're creating a world and we want people to come in. We're doing it through language and this texture of music and melody. Sometimes it's a celebration, sometimes its mourning. It can be anything once you get inside." Festival Dranouter geeft een pak nieuwe namen vrij voor de editie van 2-3-4 augustus 2019, waarvan dé verrassingen ongetwijfeld de aankondigingen zijn van de Britse succesformatie The Kooks en de Belgische hiphopkoning Zwangere Guy. Maar ook La Brass Banda, Jan De Wilde, Lenny & De Wespen, Lieven Tavernier, Black Flower en Sarah Jane Scoutenworden aan het lijstje toegevoegd samen met een reeks toppers uit de Vlaamse folkscene zoals Myrddin & Imre, Naragonia Quartet, Hot Griselda, De Garre van Kornee en Ethno Flanders. Op de affiche stonden al Tom Odell, Black Box Revelation, Novastar, Jasper Steverlinck, Tourist LeMC, Dead Man Ray, SX, Ibeyi... .. Frontman Luke Pritchard is onder de indruk: anno 2019 schitteren The Kooks als nooit te voren. Hoewel de band intussen al meer dan 10 jaar bezig is, zijn de 4 mannen nog niets van hun charme verloren. Johnny Rawls is een levende soul blues legende, meer zelfs de term "soul blues" werd uitgevonden om zijn muziek te beschrijven. Geboren te Mississippi in 1951 en al meer dan 50 jaar op het podium, zo lopen er niet veel meer van rond. Deze man heeft een ferme lading awards waaronder Soul Blues Album Of The Year en Soul Blues Artist Of The Year. Hij toerde met O.V. Ethan Johns is in de eerste plaats bekend als producer van Ryan Adams, Ray Lamontagne, Jayhawks, Kings of Leon, Paul McCartney, Crowded House, The Vaccines, Laura Marling, en Crosby, Stills and Nash. De appel valt hier duidelijk niet ver van de boom, zijn vader was niemand minder dan de legendarische producer Glyn Johns (The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelinen The Who). Ethan Johns is echter evenveel muzikant (of beter gezegd een multi-instrumentalist) die al tourde met Ryan Adams, Emmylou Harris en Ray Lamontagne en daarnaast bij tal van artiesten in de studio opdook, van John Hiatt tot Joe Satriani. Daarnaast is hij ook nog eens een uitzonderlijke songwriter én een begenadigd zanger. Als solo-artiest brengt hij al platen uit sinds 1991. Zijn recentste plaat ‘Anamnesis’ is gebaseerd op een 17e eeuws gedicht maar dat weerhield hem er niet van een tijdloze americana klassieker af te leveren. Je kent ze wel, die 'zangers' waarvan je je afvraagt of ze nu wel héél erg boos zijn en/of gewoon gruwelijke keelpijn hebben. Niet echt mijn ding tenzij goed gedoseerd en binnen de voor mij juiste muzikale context. Er duiken bovendien steeds meer vrouwen op met diezelfde 'ziekte' en dat vergt toch wel een extra inspanning van mijn kant. Wat de Oekraïense Jinjer betreft: ook al blijft het wennen, hier zit het op beide vlakken goed. Voor de leek: wat Tatiana Shmailyuk hier vocaal presteert vergt een immense stembeheersing én techniek...no shit! Even voorstellen In less than 10 years, the four-piece Progressive Groove metal wrecking machine known as JINJER have carved their very own place in the Heavy Metal landscape and are poised to go even further in 2019 and beyond. Hailing from Donetsk, this Ukrainian musical oddity formed in 2009 but consider the official start of the band with the addition of the incredible vocalist and Femme Fatale Tatiana Shmailyuk in 2010. The band labored intensively and honed their sound in practice rooms and local stages relentlessly, culminating in their now cult first album release INHALE, DON'T BREATHE in 2012. The following year JINJER were nominated and won Best Ukrainian Metal Band. They would be awarded this prize again a few years later. While most bands from a country not exactly known for it's Heavy Metal exports would be content to enjoy the little recognition received in those first few years, it was clear that JINJER craved more and were willing to go the extra mile to make this happen. It was this attitude and clear vision that pushed the band to quickly write and release their second album CLOUD FACTORY (2014), and venture into the international touring market for the first time, booking their own shows and building their reputation face to face, fan to fan and more importantly under their own terms. It was this intensity that caught the attention of Napalm Records, who quickly signed JINJER leading to the release of their critically acclaimed third album KING OF EVERYTHING (2016), as well as the game changing single and video for PISCES, which gained the band new fans, millions of views/streams and countless reaction videos on YouTube. 22 maart 2019, Arenbergschouwburg (Antwerpen) 22 maart 2016 staat bij iedereen in België in zijn geheugen als de dag van de aanslag op Brussels AirPort en Maalbeek metro. Maar waar waren jullie ‘s avonds om 21u? Iedereen ging ervan uit dat België op zijn gat lag en dat iedereen vastgekluisterd voor een TV-scherm zat voor het laatste nieuws over de aanslag en de daders. In de Arenbergschouwburg ging het leven echter gewoon verder. Na enig overleg speelde Saul Williams voor een zeer schaars opgekomen publiek zijn set. Er was zelfs zo weinig volk dat Saul het podium liet voor wat het was en gewoon tussen het volk zijn ding ging doen. De MartyrLoserKing tour ging gewoon verder met aanklachten tegen Trump, nog voor hij verkozen was, politieke statements tegen terrorisme, maar vooral sociale gerechtigheid en protest in het internettijdperk… Saul Williams was al jaren bezig maar kwam pas echt in de belangstelling van het grotere publiek als support act voor Nine Inch Nails, iets wat voor veel mensen ongepast was, maar toch bleek het een voltreffer te zijn. Twee zeer uiteenlopende genres die toch in hun boodschap samenkwamen. 22 maart 2019, zelfde plaats zelfde uur, 3 jaar later, What’s going on? Komiek en Antwerpenaar Nigel Williams, geen familie, doet even het verhaal van de aanslagen nog eens als introductie. Maar eerst even aandacht voor Darell Cole. Geboren in Londen, met roots in Sierra Leone, maar ondertussen al 15 jaar woonachtig in Antwerpen. Ondanks dat hij ons even uitnodigt voor een “pintschje straks aan den toooog” doet hij verder alles in perfect Engels. Wat hij op het podium brengt is ongezien in België. We hebben al heel wat Belgische hiphop zien passeren de laatste 25 jaar, maar niets van deze kwaliteit en intensiteit. Hij wordt bijgestaan door een DJ en saxofonist, de eerste zorgt voor vette trage beats, de tweede voor een funky en jazzy atmosfeer waarop Darrell schitterende rhymes strooit van waargebeurde verhalen. Spijtig dat er de zaal nog niet voller gelopen is, wie later kwam had ongelijk. En dan is het tijd voor Saul. Net zoals 3 jaar geleden wordt een scherm gevuld met slogans op VHS-gestoorde beelden waar primitief maar doeltreffende animaties van dollarbiljetten, moordwapens, bloed en oliepompen bijkomen. Niets is gerelateerd aan een specifiek nummer, het lijkt eerder random gecreëerd te worden, want dezelfde slogans komen terug op andere achtergronden en in willekeurige volgorde. “God is a Single Mother”, “Parce que je suis connectie”, “Ignore the Data”, … Saul is ook niet je doorsnee rapper, hij is een echte poëet, en zogenaamde Slam Poet, en dat laat hij graag horen als intermezzo tussen nummers in. Naast zes album heeft hij ook zes boeken uitgebracht. Vanavond brengt hij een zeer stevige set en veel zin een praatjes heeft hij vandaag niet in tegenstelling tot 3 jaar geleden. “Is it ok, if I don’t talk too much and just fuck around?” Naar het einde van de set kan hij het toch niet laten en vraagt hij het publiek vanwaar al de verworven gelden en goederen in onze maatschappij komen. Koffie, suiker, olie, allemaal het gevolg van slavernij en uitbuiting. We leren ineens ook dat het woord “robot” uit het Tsjechisch komt en gratis arbeid betekent. “The dream of getting rich is always at the expense of others” en dan worden Trump en Koning Leopold al makkelijk in eenzelfde zin vermeld. Dit is direct ook het thema van de track Burundi, die evengoed Chili, Bangladesh of Belgium had kunnen heten. De fans blijken vooral vrouwen te zijn en die zien Saul zijn set afsluiten met de klassieker “List of Demands”, in 2008 nog door Nike gebruikt in een commercial en vorig jaar nog gecoverd door The Kills. ‘A dark fairytale for the modern era’ We volgen een naamloos meisje, geboren in een wereld vol pijn, beschadigd en verzwakt door de mensen die er leven. Haar zoektocht naar betekenis in haar leven en haar ontmoeting met Death, op wie ze verliefd wordt, leidt tot een dubbelzinnige afloop die de luisteraar met een hoop vraagtekens achterlaat. Jawel, The Spell is een conceptalbum, maar eentje die een stuk verder gaat dan muziek met een verhaaltje erachter. Elk nummer krijgt een 'animated' video van de hand van de Roemeense graphic designer Costin Chioreanu (Ulver, Opeth), die ook instond voor alle artwork. De release wordt begeleid door een bonus audiobook vol boeiend geschreven en vertolkte verhalen die door subtiele arrangementen worden ondersteund. Een bundel om U tegen te zeggen dus. Maar wat met de muziek op zich? Waar het visuele aspect op z'n minst gezegd adembenemend is, is het muzikaal aspect iets wisselvalliger. Het album opent best goed met Pain: typische Symphonic Metal die op het einde een sterke twist krijgt door het gebruik van een draailier en een dromerige zangpassage van Anna Murphy. Aha, vandaar dus de stempel Folk Metal, al zou ik het eerder houden op de eerdere omschrijving, of zelfs Progressive Metal met Folk en Doom invloeden. Dit alles wordt pas bij Death duidelijk: heerlijk melodieus in de refreinen, tijdens de bridge een Doom sfeer mèt een prachtige dwarsfluit solo (folk invloeden) om dan naar een potige climax toe te werken met de uitstekende zang-/melodielijnen van Murphy. Het niveau schiet een stuk de hoogte in. Bij Love ongeveer dezelfde ingrediënten, zij het anders verdeeld: Anna laat de draailier het nummer inzetten, waarna violen subliem haar zangpartijen ondersteunen. Tijdens het intermezzo stuurt ze haar stem naar wat diepere regionen en folky patronen om dan terug te keren naar het refrein dat zo uit een musical zou kunnen komen. Volgt het absolute hoogtepunt uit The Spell, m.n. het titelnummer. Dit moet zowat de perfecte song zijn: de Keltisch aandoende intro (zang), de ongelooflijk mooie en catchy melodie bij het refrein, de zware gitaarsound en proggy drumritmes, opnieuw een stukje draailier en tot slot...die ongelooflijk sterke gevarieerde zang. Anna Murphy zoekt af en toe de hogere regionen van haar bereik op en dat zijn klanken waar ik niet zo gek van ben, maar ze doseert ze perfect en het stoort me helemaal niet. Hoe ze dat live allemaal in haar greep houdt - diverse zanglijnen, draailier en dwarsfluit passages - ik zou het begot niet weten maar hoop het snel te ontdekken. Hierna gaat het echter even steil bergafwaarts: Burn is terug een doordeweeks Symphonic Rock nummer en Hang hangt er zomaar wat bij zonder een echte meerwaarde te bieden. Ik vrees al het ergste - raken de ideeën op?- maar Sleep verrast op het juiste moment: een rustig sfeervol nummer dat drijft op piano en stem, die me af en toe aan Kate Bush doet denken. Goed uitgeslapen krijgen we bij Insomnia terug een boost. Vette riffs, prachtige melodie, opnieuw de dwarsfluit en draailier passend ingezet, een plotse tempowissel richting vierde, om dan na een sfeervolle dromerige (musical) passage in crescendo af te ronden. Freeze is mijn ultiem Eurovisie Songfestival nummer: zo immens catchy, vol Keltische invloeden, zware gitaren en ritmisch drumwerk én aparte zanglijnen die zich in je hoofd vastzetten en er niet meer uit te krijgen zijn...een dikke 10 van de Belgische jury! Na het korte bruggetje Fall verzuipt de band echter in een vloed van ideeën die erg onsamenhangend in Drown gepropt zijn. Het nummer schiet alle kanten uit, gewoon teveel van het goede, ook wat de duur betreft. Herpakken doen ze zich dan echter weer met de twee laatste nummers, beide een erg mooi en inventief vervolg op Love en Death, de thematiek van het album dus. Love (Pt.II) zet rustig in om halverwege aan te zwellen richting een semi-epische finale. Death (Pt.II) herneemt licht aangepast het refrein van The Spell, drijft op donkere pianoakkoorden en Kate Bush-achtige zang en baadt helemaal in een musical sfeer. Murphy laat ons nog één laatste keer van haar fantastische stemgeluid (haar beide ouders - vader is trouwens een Dubliner - zijn professionele operazangers!) genieten en ons afvragen: is dit écht het einde? Op 2 april kan je hen aan het werk zien in De Helling (Utrecht). Op 24 mei openen ze samen met Wheel voor Katatonia in de Biebob.
