PENGSHUi is een Britse grime punk band die al jaren aan de weg timmert en het in de UK goed doet. Hoewel artiesten als Bob Vylan en Nova Twins flink aan populariteit hebben gewonnen buiten de UK lijkt PENGSHUi hier, volledig onterecht, achter te blijven. Hoog tijd dat daar verandering in gaat komen. Met inmiddels twee albums, een hele rits aan EPs en singles op zak en een derde album in aantocht komt PENGSHUi nu met de single Tesseract waarvoor ze de samenwerking met Bobby Wolfgang aangingen. Wie PENGSHUi al langer volgt weet dat de band elke release weer verder lijkt te evolueren zonder hun unieke sound daarbij te verliezen. Ook met Tesseract levert de band weer een track die zowel herkenbaar als vernieuwend is. De afwisseling van de vocale wacht tussen Illaman en Bobby Wolfgang werkt goed. Voor mij is het de eerste kenningsmaking met (Kris Barras') Hollow Souls, maar deze Bad Things is al de derde single van deze Britse bluesrockformatie. Ik nodig u vriendelijk uit om ook hun vorige wapenfeiten Shotgun en Borderline (met Jared James Nichols) te ontdekken. Kris Barras is zeker geen nieuwkomer in de bluesrock. Met Hollow Souls heeft hij nu een band/project opgestart dat misschien wel eens veel verder zou kunnen gaan dan hij initieel voorzien had. Om te beginnen zijn er al die andere fantastische bandleden, zijnde drummer Joe Harris, bassist Leighton Allen en producer/multi-instrumentalist Josiah J Manning. Inspired by the U.S. supergroup Supersonic Blues Machine in which he also performed and energised by the wealth of British talent around him, to create Hollow Souls, Kris put together a homegrown jam band to serve as a creative sparring exercise during his downtime. Hollow Souls is a dream project for Kris. Together with long-term collaborator, multi-instrumentalist and producer Josiah J Manning, using Josiah’s Plymouth-based Momentum Studios as their base, a studio band consisting of drummer Joe Harris (Toby Lee / Lack of Afro) and bass player Leighton Allen (Callum Scott / The Hoosiers) became more than the sum of its parts. When Kris invited in former KBB backing singer Phoebe Jane to jam, the floodgates of creativity truly opened. In writing for her dexterous range and astonishing power, Kris and Josiah knew they had found a singer with which their musical palette could continue to evolve; the spark that ignited a whole new band into existence with Hollow Souls.

Motionless in White komt op 28 februari naar Vorst Nationaal in Brussel! De Amerikaanse metalcoreband geeft het genre een unieke gothic twist. Denk aan horror-lyrics in combinatie met industrial metal, synths, breakdowns en intense liveshows die niet alleen muzikaal maar ook visueel binnenkomen. De band rond zanger Chris Motionless groeide zo uit tot een van de meest eigenzinnige acts van de 21e eeuw. Wat ooit begon als een gothic metalband uit het industriële Scranton (Pennsylvania), is anno 2025 uitgegroeid tot een van de meest gehypete metalcorebands van het moment. Motionless In White combineert moeiteloos invloeden uit metalcore, rock en nu metal, met invloeden variërend van Megadeth en Metallica tot Slipknot, Marilyn Manson en Rob Zombie. De band heeft wereldwijd een toegewijde fanbase opgebouwd en heeft meer dan een miljard streams en views op hun naam staan. Het blijft maar sterke releases regenen uit de stal van Polderrecords. Met 'Unfair Fight', hun tweede single van dit jaar, brengt Stonemule een mix van sludgy stoner met hardcore invloeden. De afwisselende zang van gitarist Benjamin Himpens en bassist Wannes Breyne, gedreven op vette riffs en drumrolls van nieuwe members Tom Schelfaut (gitaar) en Jon Huyghe (drums) zorgen voor een stomende stoner meets hardcore track. Wisselingen in de line-up waren de voorbije jaren de grootste uitdaging voor de West-Vlamingen. Hopelijk zijn ze nu op weg om in een stabiele bezetting het ingeslagen pad voort te zetten; aan talent ontbreekt het hen duidelijk niet. Founded by Tom Vandaele (Urge for Blood, GOD), Benjamin Himpens , Ruben Dewilde, and Dries Herreman, the band quickly gained a reputation for their intense live shows. A shift came in 2015 when bassist Dries departed, making way for Wannes Breyne and the introduction of dual vocals—setting the stage for something heavier. By 2016, Stonemule hit pause, re-emerging in 2017 with a sludgier, doom-soaked sound. Their 2018 debut EP, Dystopian State, recorded on a shoestring budget, made serious waves. Fusing hardcore, stoner metal, and doom, it earned critical acclaim— GBHBL hailed it as “EP of the year”, while Merchants of Air praised its “sheer energy and hardcore-infused stoner metal.” In 2021, they dropped “Bitter”, a single featured on Polderriffs Volume II. Op zaterdag 13 september 2025 vindt de zestiende editie van Baroeg Open Air plaats in het Rotterdamse Zuiderpark. Ook dit jaar presenteert het festival een veelzijdige line-up binnen de harde en alternatieve muziekstromingen: van scheurende gitaren tot pompende beats. De programmering is inmiddels compleet. Headliners zijn de legendarische streetpunkband Cock Sparrer, Tom G Warrior’s Triumph Of Death die de muziek van extreme metal-pioniers Hellhammer ten gehore brengt en hardcore-grensverlegger N-Vitral die een industrial set doet. Liefhebbers van crossover kunnen hun hart ophalen bij Rudeboy ft. DJ DNA, met een show vol hits van Urban Dance Squad. Ook de Duitse zanger Peter Heppner van Wolfsheim is van de partij met zijn project Heppner’s Tanzzwang. Daarnaast betreedt hardrocklegende Vengeance het podium, evenals de populaire darkwave band Lebanon Hanover die eerder al een uitverkochte show in Baroeg speelde. In totaal staan er 30 acts geprogrammeerd, verdeeld over vier podia. Het festival wordt georganiseerd met de inzet van ruim 300 vrijwilligers en de belangstelling is groter dan ooit: de voorverkoop heeft inmiddels een record gebroken. Directeur en programmeur Leon van Rijnsbergen laat weten: “In 2024 trokken we een recordaantal bezoekers en dit jaar hebben we de programmering nóg gevarieerder gemaakt om een breder publiek aan te spreken. Baroeg Open Air is uniek in Nederland juist omdat we gitaarbands combineren met elektronische acts. We zijn enorm trots op deze mooie line-up en kijken ernaar uit om opnieuw duizenden bezoekers te verwelkomen op ons mooie festival.” Ondertussen wordt op een steenworp afstand van het festivalterrein, aan de Spinozaweg, gewerkt aan het nieuwe pand van poppodium Baroeg. All Time Low is al sinds hun oprichting in 2003 niet meer weg te denken uit de poppunkscene. Met vijf opeenvolgende top 10-noteringen in de 'Billboard Top 200', platina onderscheidingen en uitverkochte shows wereldwijd, groeide de band snel uit tot een publieksfavoriet. Zelfs muziekmagazine Rolling Stone nam hun album 'So Wrong, It’s Right' op in de lijst van de '50 Greatest Pop Punk Albums'. In 2020 bereikte All Time Low een nieuw hoogtepunt met het album 'Wake Up, Sunshine'. Wanneer onlangs een moord kraaien haar tuin opzocht, begon Jess Woodland hen te bestuderen. Om uiteindelijk vast te stellen dat zij evengoed het onderwerp was van hun interesse, door die gitzwarte oogjes van hen. En zo ontwikkelde ze een soort liefde voor de diertjes en hun dagelijkse routine, iets waar ze telkens weer naar uitkeek. Door dit gegeven is haar nieuwste single The Show  geïnspireerd, al gaat het liedje over véél meer dan dat. Het is een nummer dat vertelt over het dagelijks gevecht tegen neergehaald te worden, tegen de verwachting om te falen. Jess hoopt aan de hand van The Show mensen de kracht te geven om terug op te staan, los van het aantal keer je faalt, zolang je maar gelooft dat de beslissing hiertoe helemaal bij jezelf ligt. Muzikaal vertaalt dit alles zich in een best opbeurende melodie. De song wordt gedragen door een fiddle, een akoestische gitaar, een banjo, een lichte drum shuffle en die mooie stem van Jess die ons uitnodigt “Come for the funeral and stay for the show.”. In conjunction with singing everything from 1800’s folk tunes to Pasty Cline, I held a strong love for alternative and metal music and my image reflected this. Somewhere down the line, I started feeling like I didn’t fit the mold of the Bluegrass/Americana scene due to my looks. Slowly but surely, I started to feel like I had no place in that community as I stuck out at that time fairly heavily. So I stopped singing and writing for years. Now I spend my days proving myself wrong and unlearning the mean things I've convinced myself of. American Gothic (or as I like to call my self ”y'allternative”) is back and stronger than ever - and thank goodness for it. I’ve never felt more comfortable in my skin. I’ve been through many hard times in my life, as I am no stranger to pain and loss - and while music, to many, is a career, for me it’s become a way to outlive some of my darkest days. Binnen twee weken komt het nieuwe Lord Of The Lost Album uit onder de naam; OPVS Noir Vol. 1. Nu brengt de band ons nog een nieuwe single van dit album en niet zomaar eentje.
