Vorige week dinsdag was Slipknot in Nederland. Dat zij goed zijn en dat zij ook in Nederland een kick ass show hebben gespeeld, is wel duidelijk. Op deze site zijn daarvan ook al prachtige foto’s verschenen die Femke geschoten had.
Interessanter, in dit geval, tenminste, is dat ik een kort interview had met Mark Vollelunga, gitarist van de band die voor Slipknot opende: Nothing More. Deze band had, zo hoorde ik dus, bijna niet geopend, omdat ze zelf shows hadden geboekt. Nothing More is immers bezig met een Europese tour, waarbij o.a. Graspop en Hellfest zijn aangedaan. De mannen zagen vooral uit naar die festivals, want een paar jaar terug hebben ze die moeten afzeggen omdat toen hun album moest worden afgemaakt. Maar nu zijn ze er geweest en het was fantastisch.
Om te beginnen, vroeg ik Mark naar het album The Few Not Fleeting, één van mijn favoriete albums van Nothing More.
“The Few Not Fleeting is a reflection of us, back then, not throwing the towel in the ring and quitting the band, despite all the problems we dealt with. Whenever you’re in a band, it’s easy to get distracted from goals and stuff. The title of that album is a reminder to ourselves that we will push on.”
Een van jullie mooiste en meest tot de verbeelding sprekende nummers, is Jenny. Wat kun je ons daarover vertellen? “The song Jenny is about family struggles due to a family member having addiction problems. It’s about somebody close to you from whom you know has so much potential but who’s making wrong decisions in life, time and time again and rolling with the wrong people. It’s about not knowing what to say to someone like that anymore other than maybe they should learn the hard way: ‘Maybe you should just fall.’ I think a lot of people can relate to o lot of that, to the tough love aspect of it.”
Welke muziek luister jij zelf?
“At a few of the festivals we played, lately, I was very excited to see Incubus. I always have been a big Incubus fan and I love Mike’s guitar playing. I also very much like Muse and admire what powerhouse that trio is, great songs, great production too.” “When I first started learning guitar, of course, I played Metallica and all of mr. Hetfield’s and mr. Hammond’s riffs. I’m really appreciative for all of that. They’re heroes!”
Nou was Jonny vroeger jullie drummer. Inmiddels zingt hij de sterren van de hemel, maar kruipt-ie nog wel ’s achter het drumstel?
“Jonny is still a great drummer. It’s funny, every time he gets behind the drumkit, it’s very nice jamming with him. Now that he’s got his own place, it would be nice to, when he eventually gets a drumkit again, have a few more song that are his drumwise. Drumming Jonny has a unique flavour.”
Hoe zit dat eigenlijk met jullie eigen tour en het openen voor Slipknot, vorige week. Ik hoorde dat jullie shows hebben moeten cancellen om hier te kunnen spelen.
“A few months ago we heard it would be a possibility that we would open for Slipknot. And of course we were excited to be a part of that. We weren’t sure until about a month ago. Actually, we had to cancel a few headline shows, because we had to wait so long for the actual green light, we couldn’t wait any more and went and booked our own shows. We will come back to Hamburg, Leipzig and a few other German towns later, probably in February.”
Hoe hebben jullie je voorbereid op het openen bij Slipknot? Of hoe bereiden jullie je überhaupt voor voordat je het podium op gaat?
“Preparing for a show like opening for Slipknot, we say prayers to Corey and everybody else in Slipknot. We have statues here and we bow down to them and we pray to the Knot that is the Slip that we will do a good job. [Mark moet zelf erg lachen].
No, seriously, we do a normal warm up routine. I practice guitar for a few hours, get my fingers going, shake it all out, do some stretches, have a shot of whiskey, have a few energy drinks and get it all cranked up.”
Wat wil je nog tegen onze lezers zeggen?
“I would like to thank especially the Belgian people for your awesome beer. Thank you for the monks and them studying all the guru wisdom that there is on yeast and malt and hop.”
Zoals Mark al zei, komt Nothing More begin 2024 terug naar Europa. Aangezien er nog geen data op hun site staan, kunnen we alleen maar hopen dat ze Nederland wederom zullen aan doen. Ze hebben in het verleden al verschillende keren in 013 gestaan, dus wie weet….
