Conclusie: dit is een album van deze klassebakken dat ik WEL zal kopen. Natuurlijk blijf ik fan en kijk ik uit naar hun concert in de AB dit najaar.
Ik keek toch een beetje met een bang hart uit naar de opvolger van het eerder dit jaar verschenen Darkfighter. Zou ik nu écht tweemaal op rij moeten vaststellen dat één van mijn favoriete bands van de afgelopen tien jaar de weg een beetje kwijt is, of tenminste dat ik ze niet helemaal meer aanvoel? En dat met een dikke drie weken vóór hun uitverkochte concert in de AB? Een concert dat ik mag shooten en verslaan trouwens? Brrrrrrrr, geen prettige gedachte en eentje die me zowaar met een schuldgevoel deed opzadelen.
Maar kijk, Lightbringer doet het licht terug aan voor me. Niet dat ik dit nu plots het beste van de band ooit vind, maar het korte, slechts zes nummers tellende en net geen vijfendertig minuten durende album is alvast een pak coherenter dan zijn voorganger. Coherent en toch gevarieerd én met nog steeds ruimte voor een experimentje. Net dat experimenteren vond ik bij Darkfighter een pak minder geslaagd, dus toch nog even terugluisteren, kwestie van zeker te zijn dat ik geen prut in mijn oren had. Neen, dus, ik blijf bij mijn gevoel van destijds. Genoeg over die eerste worp uit 2023 nu en over naar het tweede luik. Dat opent met een directe link naar Darkside, de laatste song op het vorige album. Meteen ook het enige nummer wat ik voor Rival Sons 'experimenteel' zou noemen. Darkfighter is bijna wat je een rock opus zou kunnen noemen, een uiterst gelaagde song die diverse kanten op gaat maar nooit de weg verliest. Het is een kleine negen minuten genieten van stukjes semi-akoestische folk, fragmenten heavy classic rock en psychedelische toetsen. Scott Holiday laat hier een breed spectrum van zijn kunnen horen, waarbij vooral zijn solo op de klassieke gitaar mijn oren doet spitsen. Yep, hij fuzzt er ook lekker op los zoals we gewoon zijn. Er duikt een Hammond passage op in ware DP-style en de finale mag je gerust episch noemen. Tijdens Mercy en Sweet Life gaan ze terug lekker aan het rocken en Redemption lijkt wel het broertje van het prachtige Rapture. Een knipoog naar Led Zeppelin kan je het door folk beïnvloedde Before The Fire (neen, niet het album uit 2009) noemen, waarbij rustig wordt ingezet om dan krachtiger verder te gaan. Ook afsluiter Mosaic heeft ergens wat invloeden uit folk, maar dan van het stevige soort. Noem het gerust een power ballad, maar dan eentje met héél veel ziel.
Ben ik Buchanan vergeten noemen? C'mon peepz, hoeveel keer moet ik nog herhalen dat de man één van de beste rockstrotten ooit heeft? Wanneer hij dan nog eens zingt zoals op Lightbringer, waarbij de uithalen goed gedoseerd zijn, dan ben ik helemaal in mijn nopjes.
Kopen dat ding ... en tot zondag 12 oktober in de AB, right?

Rival Sons crafted LIGHTBRINGER and DARKFIGHTER during the same sessions over the course of 2021. Once again, they recorded with creative confidant and longtime producer Dave Cobb behind the board. The band initially dropped DARKFIGHTER to unanimous tastemaker praise earlier this summer. Classic Rock attested, “DARKFIGHTER might just be Rival Sons’ masterpiece,” and GLIDE Magazine enthused, “DARKFIGHTER is a lean hard rock album that condenses what Rival Sons does well into a brief attack.” At the same time, they have piled up millions of streams across the likes of “Nobody Wants To Die,” “Bird in the Hand,” “Rapture,” and more.
About LIGHTBRINGER, Scott said, “When you do two albums back-to-back like this, there are a lot of things to think about. The first record has to pack enough of a punch and tell enough of a story for the second half to have an even bigger impact. We balanced them out with energy and meaning, but the follow-up always needed to deliver a bigger blow. I think LIGHTBRINGER provides this.”

Rival Sons recently concluded a U.S. tour with The Smashing Pumpkins and are currently selling out venues across Europe on a long-awaited return to their European fanbase. Known for their live performances Rival Sons have not skipped a beat delivering DARKFIGHTER and LIGHTBRINGER new tracks to UK audiences this week. RushonRock declared, “More than a decade down the line and the peerless frontman is in an ethereal league of his own — celebrating the Sons’ ever-evolving catalogue with the confidence of an empowered artist at one with his work.” Metal Talk affirmed, “From start to finish, this was a show that will ring in the grateful ears of – I can only assume – everyone who bore witness to it.
