Soms zijn de makkelijkst te schrijven stukken net deze waar je maar niet aan begint. Zo stelde ik het pennen van deze review alsmaar uit. Waarom? Was ik aan het wachten op 'het juiste moment' of op 'een teken'? Bwah, daar geloof ik eigenlijk niet in. Ik moet wel toegeven, in aflevering 6 van The Queen's Gambit - net gekeken en verder heeft dat hier niets mee te maken - settled Beth Harmon zich finaal in....Lexington, Kentucky. Mag dat net de geboorteplaats van ene Chris Stapleton zijn. En zo begin ik er dan toch aan. Wat er te vertellen valt over Starting Over, op het gangbare na dat je ondertussen bijna overal kan lezen? Laat me zeggen dat Mr. Stapleton hier zowat het volledige spectrum dat americana te bieden heeft, dekt. Ook dat hij, hoe sterk dit album ook is, hier in Belgiƫ nog steeds geen potten zal breken. Getuige dat dit op vandaag, twee volle dagen na de release, nog steeds de Ʃnige review is binnen onze landsgrenzen.
De eerste vier songs alleen al coveren uitstappen richting folk (ik hoor Simon & Garfunkel), swamp blues, een vurige soulballad Ʃn traditionele country & western, in die volgorde. Verder kan je genieten van country rock, southern rock, een streepje boogie en zelfs een schepje heartland rock. Nee, hem in de country schuif proppen is compleet blind zijn voor de variatie die de goede man in zijn muziek stopt. Al heeft het hem natuurlijk geen windeieren opgeleverd, getuige.... (lees maar even 'lees'). Had hij echt nood aan die drie covers die, op het prachtige, ingetogen Old Friends na, absoluut overbodig zijn? Wanneer je elf zo goed als allemaal sterke eigen nummers kan pennen, dan doe je verder wat je wil. Dat het mooie Maggie's Song in het refrein nogal schatplichtig is aan The Weight (The Band) vergeef ik hem graag. Diehard country fans zullen de aanklacht getiteld Watch You Burn niet kunnen appreciƫren, but hey, who gives a fuck! Stapleton is niet de blindelings 'hardhat gunrack, achin'-back, over taxed, flag-wavin' redneck en dus lijkt ook hier het vertikaal klasseren in de c&w schuif niet van toepassing. Nog een reden waarom niet? Hoort iemand ergens die zielig jankende lap steel of die enerverende 'fiddles' in de nummers? Goed geluisterd, want toch wel: in Cold zorgen de strijkers echter voor een klassieke en donkere toets die naar de keel grijpt en afsluiter Nasvhille, TN is...duh...oertraditionele country, dus ook dat is hem vergeven.
Komaan Belgiƫ, get over it, op deze manier kan 'country' zo mooi zijn dat het spijtig is dat de vooroordelen over het genre zomaar gehanteerd blijven. In Nederland hebben ze dat reeds lang begrepen. Nu ja, daar vallen ze gewoonlijk als een blok voor alles wat vanuit de V.S. overwaait (*knipoog*)

The album finds Stapleton back in his second home, Nashvilleās historic RCA Studio A (with additional work done at Muscle Shoals Sound and Compass Sound Studio), surrounded by his trusted collaborators as well as some new faces. Produced by Dave Cobb (who also plays acoustic guitar), the record features his beloved wife, Morgane Stapleton (vocals, tambourine), with longtime bandmates J.T. Cure (bass) and Derek Mixon (drums). Special guests include legendary musicians Mike Campbell (electric guitar), Benmont Tench (Hammond B3 organ) and Paul Franklin (pedal steel) as well as the Nashville Urban Choir who are featured on āWatch You Burn,ā written by Stapleton and Campbell.
Kentucky-born Stapleton is a 5x Grammy, 10x CMA and 7x ACM Award-winner and one of the countryās most respected and beloved musicians. Following 2015ās quadruple platinum breakthrough solo debut album Traveller, Stapleton released two No. 1 albums in 2017. Both From A Room: Volume 1 (certified platinum) and From A Room: Volume 2 (certified gold) take their name from legendary RCA Studio A, where they were recorded with Cobb.
