De heren van meest succesvolle rocksensatie van Zwitserland zijn terug met een vervolg op hun album Silver van 2017. Je had het wellicht al door dat dit album hun dertiende studio album is. Ook dertien nummers, beginnende met Bad News. Dit zijn tevens de openingswoorden waarmee het nummer schreeuwend start en dat mag je bij de voorstelling van het album vrij letterlijk nemen, nu deze geannuleerd werd door het Corona-virus. Dat neemt echter niet weg dat ze hun start ook missen, want met ruwe riffs lijken de heren hun kenmerkende sound terug te vinden. Alhoewel drummer Hena Habegger (die officieel een pauze voor zijn vaderschap inlast) niet in de video voorkomt, zien we ook geen vervanger.
Missteria is een stevig nummer dat ook als single uitgebracht werd. Het laat de beginjaren en de komst van Nic samenvloeien. Het DNA zit er nog duidelijk in, al heeft Nic er zijn eigen wending kunnen aan geven. Van ABBA’s S.O.S. heeft Nic helemaal zijn eigen ruigere versie van gemaakt, met behoud van de structuur van het originele poppy nummer.
#13 is een vrij gevarieerd album. Nummers als Bad News, Every Time I Die en Missteria zorgen voor een sterke start, maar daarna verliest het nu en dan mijn aandacht door rocknummers die het gevoel van destijds niet meer in zich hebben. Het komt wel terug met Better Than Love, Save The Date en Marry You.
Toch is mijn algemene indruk positiever dan bij Silver. Het is duidelijk dat Steve een erg goede invloed had op de muziek van de band en die ondanks de sterke pogingen van Nic, de band niet meer hetzelfde niveau haalt. Idem AC/DC, idem Queen, … . Toch een vrij goed album dat enkele spins nodig had.

There are no long introductions as the band shift straight into gear with opener ‘Bad News‘, Nic Maeder giving full power right from the off. On top form as usual, he provides an impassioned vocal performance inspired by the pounding drums and wild guitars. ‘Bad News’ alongside love song ‘Marry You’ - were created during a song writing session with THE HOOTERS mastermind Eric Bazilian. The opener and songs like ’10,000 Faces’ are exactly what true fans have come to love about Gotthard - fiery, headstrong rock’n’roll armed with the finest song writing. To put it simply, this is classic Gotthard at their best. »#13« proves to be one of the most diverse albums of the band’s career. Any filler? Absolutely not – instead there’s an exciting mixture of fast and hard elements such as on ‘Every Time I Die‘, straight-forward lyrical messages on ‘Man On A Mission‘, old-school blues-rock on ‘Another Last Time‘, epic Ballads like ‘I Can Say I’m Sorry‘ and unbridled 70’s psychedelia on ‘Rescue Me‘, the immensely energetic closer.
