Het voelt al weer een tijdje geleden dat ik nog iets nieuws van Beartooth heb gehoord, deze Free brengt daar gelukkig verandering in. Daar waar het nummer in eerste instantie redelijk generic en niet enorm origineel klinkt, heeft het wel een super catchy refrein dat je de rest van de dag/week nog zal achtervolgen. Vanaf de derde keer luisteren, betrapte ik mezelf er dan ook op dat ik hem al aan het meezingen was.
Hoewel ik zelf uiteraard niet weet waar de track exact over gaat, voelt het aan de andere kant wel aan als een kantelpunt voor zanger Caleb Shomo. Waar die laatste nu net free van geworden is, kan ik niet zeggen, maar je voelt het wel in zijn stem en je ziet het in de music video. Muzikaal dus misschien niet zo onderscheidend, maar qua tekst en dankzij de nodige screams naar het einde toe, voelt het wel aan als een empowering nummer, dat het live vermoedelijk erg goed gaat doen in de toekomst.
