De Duitse metalband Mental Cruelty is terug met de nieuwe single “The Serpent of Midgard”. Met deze track duikt de band opnieuw de wereld van de Noorse mythologie in. Het nummer vertelt het verhaal van Jörmungandr, de gigantische slang en het tweede kind van Loki, en zijn legendarische laatste gevecht met Thor.
“The Serpent of Midgard” laat horen hoe Mental Cruelty hun brute deathcore-basis steeds verder uitbreidt met invloeden uit black metal en melodische death metal. De zware riffs, donkere melodieën en agressieve vocalen sluiten perfect aan bij het verhaal van de wereldslang die uit de oceaan oprijst en de strijd aangaat met de dondergod.
De band vertelt over de inspiratie achter de nieuwe single:
“On last year’s ‘Helheim,’ we expanded our instruments beyond typical deathcore fare (guitar, bass, drums and, of course, monstrous vocals) to include folk music’s talharpa, aiding in the telling of Norse mythology’s Hel. It’s only appropriate we continue darkening our sound with more black metal and melodeath inspirations as we tell the story of her brother, Jörmungandr, the titular ‘Serpent of Midgard,’ in his epic ocean battle with his uncle Thor. For those unfamiliar with the folklore, it ends in both of their demises: talk about family issues!”
Voor het muzikale gedeelte wilde Mental Cruelty vooral de intensiteit van het gevecht tussen Jörmungandr en Thor laten horen. De band haalde inspiratie uit verschillende extreme metalbands en noemt onder andere Signs of the Swarm als invloed voor de zware passages in het nummer.
“Musically, we wanted to capture the intensity of the conflict, with our guitarist Nahuel Lozano’s working title of ‘Gojibehe’ summing up key influences. You can guess those, but we’ll spell out the inspiration behind the chunky mid-section and the closest thing we get to a full-on breakdown here: our brothers Signs of the Swarm and the insane tones on their latest album!”
Ook de videoclip van “The Serpent of Midgard” werd onder zware omstandigheden opgenomen. De band trotseerde tijdens de productie temperaturen onder het vriespunt om de donkere sfeer van het nummer zo goed mogelijk vast te leggen.
“But while we learned from bands we look up to and friends alike musically, sadly, we never learn from ourselves and once again shot the music video in subzero temperatures. The results are worth it—you can see for yourself—but damn, that was cold.”
Europese headline tour met Ov Sulfur en Extermination Dismemberment
Na een drukke periode met shows in Europa en Noord-Amerika keert Mental Cruelty later dit jaar terug naar de podia voor een uitgebreide Europese headline tour. De band neemt Ov Sulfur en Extermination Dismemberment mee als support. Op geselecteerde data spelen ook Acranius en Sun Eater mee.
