Albums | Unleash The Archers - Phantoma

Het was toch weeral enkele jaren geleden dat Unleash The Archers nog eens een nieuw album had uitgebracht. Met zijn tien nieuwe nummers, zou je denken dat Phantoma maar een dik half uur zou duren. De gemiddelde duur van vijf minuten per track zorgt er echter voor dat je je met dit album toch wel een klein uurtje bezig houdt. Hun thema is doorheen de jaren nog steeds niet veranderd. UTA verteld ons in elk nummer steeds meer en meer verhalen over een futuristische wereld waarin mensen moeten samenleven met robots en AI. Hun stijl aan de andere kant, die is wel lichtjes veranderd. Daar waar albums als Apex en Time Stands Still nog vol stonden met in your face powernummers en powerscreams tot en met, kregen we bij Abyss al eerder een iets rustiger en trager album. Phantoma is een mix tussen beide; daar waar het wat trager op gang komt met Human Era, springt titeltrack Ph4/NT0-m4 er volledig uit met zijn stevige powerelementen.

Die laatste pakte dan ook meteen mijn aandacht met zijn up-tempo strofes en epische refrein. De key change in het laatste refrein waar Brittney Hayes overgaat naar haar kopstem maakt het nummer echt af en zorgt ervoor dat dit al mijn favoriet is van het hele album. The Collective zorgt dan nog voor een ander soort verrassing, wanneer Brittney er ineens een aantal stevige screams tegenaan gooit naar het einde toe. Indrukwekkend? Zeker! Helaas voelt de rest van het nummer over het algemeen heel traag aan, voornamelijk door de vocal lines.

Give It Up Or Give It All heeft ook een volledig andere sound als de rest van het album. Ook deze track is wat trager, maar wel op een epische manier (als dat logisch klinkt). De inspirerende tekst maakt dit ook wel echt een heel mooi nummer. Gelukkig maar, want het ding duurt meer dan 7:30 minuten. Ghost In The Mist is er nog eentje waarbij we die stevige screams te horen krijgen, gecombineerd met een zware gitaarlijn. Wat eigenlijk best wel vet klinkt en voor Unleash The Archers een unieke sound creëert. Een laatste nummer dat er voor mij meteen uitsprong en een van mijn favorieten werd is Seaking Vengeance. Ook hier weer, vette screams, maar verder heeft deze track minder dat trage gevoel en gaat het eerder richting de stevige powermetal. Meer van dat please!

Phantoma is dus een beetje een mengelmoes tussen tracks die iets trager aanvoelen en enkele vette powernummers. Voeg daar nog het nieuwere element van die zware screams bij en je krijgt, ondanks hetzelfde thema, een uniek album voor deze band. Ik hoop persoonlijk naar de toekomst toe, dat de ratio powernummers tegenover tragere vocal lines weer gaat keren en we eerder de stevige kant opgaan. Of dat effectief gaat gebeuren, zullen we nog even moeten afwachten. Phantoma is in elk geval wel zeker de moeite om eens aandachtig te beluisteren als je fan bent van Unleash The Archers of female voiced powermetal.

Canada’s most exciting metal band, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS, recently ascended to worldwide power metal domination with their dual-concept releases of 2017’s Apex and 2020’s breakout triumph Abyss. Frontwoman and lyricist Brittney Slayes conjured Phantoma’s concept in 2021; before the swarm of pressing commentary surrounding AI and its impending grip on society began to reach an all-time high. Led by the album’s protagonist Phantoma, a Phase 4 / Network Tier 0 unit - model A, the story recounts the trials of AI gaining sentience on a dystopian, near-future planet earth. Via the band’s one-of-a-kind blend of power metal, traditional heavy metal, modern prog and pop sensibilities, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS spin a web of sharp musicality, high sci-fi concept and important social commentary about seeing the brutal truths behind the manufactured sheen of social media posturing. Defying controversy and bringing their imagination to life, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS utilized AI during the writing, filming, and production process on Phantoma, and weaved electronic and synthwave elements throughout the album’s 10 colossal anthems, which - in line with its theme - prove much darker and heavier in comparison to the bright positivity of Abyss.

Album opener “Human Era” sets the tone with imagery of a bleak, windswept futurescape that crescendos headlong into the breakneck pace of following power metal bastion “Ph4/NT0mA” - a masterwork of dueling guitar solos and vocal acrobatics. Trad-metal influenced “Buried In Code” lights the way with pummeling rhythms before the album’s path turns dark on heavy metal hardened “The Collective”, with Brittney Slayes’ warm tones inviting the listener to ‘join or stand aside’! Hair-raising first single “Green & Glass” unveils the truth with dynamic verses and progressive-tinged guitar work before the upbeat 80s flavored “Gods In Decay” and the extraordinary balladic anthem “Give It Up Or Give It All” showcase the varied song writing prowess of UNLEASH THE ARCHERS’ modern era. A trifecta of concept closers begins with the moody “Ghosts In The Mist”, leading into the soaring yet menacing “Seeking Vengeance” before closing with the bittersweet tale of “Blood Empress”.

Mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen, and with lead guitarist Andrew Kingsley at the helm as both principal songwriter and producer, Phantoma is an exciting advancement in UNLEASH THE ARCHERS’ songwriting and storytelling mastery, and a giant leap forward in their towering musical trajectory.
