Of Mice & Men, het metalcore kwartet uit California, bracht afgelopen februari hun EP Timeless uit. Hierop konden we reeds luisteren naar Timeless, Obsolete, en Anchor; stuk voor stuk lekker harde nummers. Maar daar stopt het niet! Vandaag brengen de rockers opnieuw een EP uit: Bloom. Beide EPs zullen onderdeel uitemaken van het volgende album van Of Mice & Men. We krijgen opnieuw drie songs te horen.
Levee is de eerste song, en deze slaat meteen in als een bom en dat gedurende een kleine 5 minuten! Ik ben nog steeds onder de indruk van zanger Aaron Pauley's stem en prijs mezelf nog elke keer gelukkig dat hij na enkele jaren de frontman werd van Of Mice & Men!
Titlesong Bloom start dan weer wat rustiger, maar is minstens even sterk en vooral het refrein blijft sterk hangen. Pauley zegt het volgende: "'Bloom' is a song about grieving the death of a family member. "It's about understanding, through that loss, that grief is not only love in its most visceral and wildest form, but that it's also the ultimate price we pay to experience such love. To know profound grief is to have known profound love. Nothing and no one lasts forever. Love isn't a bouquet of plastic flowers; it's watching the petals fall."
Pulling Teeth kondigt alweer het einde aan van de veel te korte EP, maar laat ons snakken naar meer. Ik kan alleen maar zeggen dat ik erg uitkijk om het volgende onderdeel van het aankomende album te horen. En natuurlijk om ze (fingers crossed) volgend jaar live aan het werk te zien op Jera On Air!

At its best, heavy music produces songs of escape and catharsis. Across a half-dozen studio albums, the group's combination of crowd-moving breakdowns, staccato rhythms, and soaring melodic vocals bridged the gap from the underground to the world at large. Their songs catapulted them onto massive tours with Linkin Park and Rise Against (2015); Slipknot and Marilyn Manson (2016); and Five Finger Death Punch and In Flames (2017).
At every turn, no matter what obstacles presented themselves, the four men at the Of Mice & Men core since 2016 never lost sight of the strength of their connection to the audience or each other. They refocused and persevered at every turn, delivering massive anthems that work in the most intimate of punk clubs, the biggest of European festivals, and American rock radio formats alike. It's all about the songs themselves and what they mean to people at the end of the day. The music of OF MICE & MEN begins as something deeply personal shared among the quartet.
