Glen Hansard en PIAS hadden geen beter moment kunnen uitkiezen voor de release van All That Was East is West of Me Now. Nadat we temperatuursgewijs wekenlang boven onze stand hebben geleefd is de herfst nu volop gearriveerd. En laat dit album daar nu net de perfecte soundtrack bij zijn. Dus, zet u bij de haard of kachel, drapeer een dekentje over uw knieën, schenk uzelf een Cornet Oaked (of iets wijnachtig als u dat prefereert), klem uw hoofdtelefoon over uw oren en geniet van dit knapperige album.
Want als er iemand het metier van warme songsmederij onder de knie heeft is het Glen Hansard wel. De man is al sinds zijn 13e (I kid U not) professioneel muzikant. Dat is dus al zo'n slordige 40 jaar. Als solo artiest is All That Was East ... pas zijn vijfde album en wie de man al een tijdje volgt weet dat hij geen twee dezelfde albums na elkaar maakte en dat is nu ook niet het geval. Kenmerkend is altijd hoe hij met ogenschijnlijk simpele akkoorden de basis voor prachtige songs legt maar die dankzij de arrangementen telkens een unieke sound weet te geven. En daar staan op dit album weer acht mooie exemplaren van. Afsluiter Reprise tel ik niet mee als een volwaardige track, volgens mij hadden ze gewoon nog wat seconden nodig om de vinyl te vullen.
Beginnen doet de plaat met The Feast of St. John een melancholische slow waltz waarin Hansard al in het eerste refrein zowel je merg als beenderen weet te beroeren. Down on Our Knees is het meest uptempo nummer maar de lyrics zijn bijzonder deprimerend en fatalistisch. Alles gaat naar de kl*ten en het enige wat we kunnen doen is onze armen jammerend in de lucht steken, zoiets.
Vocaal kan Hansard zoals geweten sterk emotioneel uithalen maar het klinkt even mooi wanneer hij croont zoals op Sure As The Rain, een track die sterk beinvloed lijkt door zijn idool Leonard Cohen. Die andere held, Dylan, zit dan weer sterk in There's No Mountain.
Een perfect voorbeeld van die arrangementen waar ik het daarnet over had is Between Us There is Music. Ook Bearing Witness is zo'n track die al een paar keer op repeat heb gezet.
Bij zijn vorige album, This Wild Willing (2019) duurde het even vooraleer ik mee was maar bij dit All That Was East is West of Me Now, was het er weer meteen boenk op. Dankuwel Mr. Hansard. C U in Brussels!

Glen Hansard is set to release his fifth solo record ‘All That Was East Is West Of Me Now’ on October 20. The album came together thru a series of five word-of-mouth gigs Hansard arranged at his small local pub over the course of November 2022. “A song only becomes what it is through witness,” says Hansard, and in the presence of an audience, “the song finds a different way.” By the end of the residency, the record had taken shape and recording commenced with long time co-conspirator David Odlum at his home studio on the outskirts of Dublin.
The title, which Hansard says, stems from the “sudden realization that there’s more behind than ahead,” suggests a survey from a great height, taking in terrain travelled and yet also that which is still to be discovered. Though the passage of time may be a central theme, these eight tracks focus more on the promise for the future than thoughts of regret or nostalgia.
Four years ago Hansard released ‘This Wild Willing’, an album that Associated Press hailed “a rangy collection of experiments in musical exploration. His work demands that you listen with the same ferocity he brings to his playing and singing,” while NPR Music called it “gorgeous: expansive without sacrificing intimacy.”
Hansard also kept busy in the years between ‘This Wild Willing’ and this new album, collaborating on the Flag Day soundtrack with Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Cat Power, touring with Eddie Vedder as a member of The Earthlings, and reuniting with Markéta Irglová for a sold-out run of shows commemorating the 15th anniversary of the film Once.
