Hier is hij dan; deel twee van de Reader Of The Runes trilogy! Waar Divination heel vrolijk en folky klonk, is deze Rapture net eerder duister en af en toe zelfs een beetje triest qua gevoel. Het laat weer maar eens zien hoe veelzijdig Elvenking is en wat ze allemaal kunnen, want ondanks dit donkere gevoel is het nog steeds zeer straffe muziek.
Met een zachte en sombere akoestische intro wordt de titeltrack van het album ingeleid. Dit in combinatie met die klokken en violen gaf mij in eerste instantie een beetje een Pirates Of The Caribbean gevoel. Wanneer Rapture dan echt van start gaat hoor je meteen wat je te wachten staat voor de rest van het album; geweldige riffs, earpiercing drums en sterke vocals. Dit in een iets donkerder jasje dan voorheen, maar zeker niet minder leuk!
The Hanging Tree was de eerste single die ik hoorde van dit album en ik moet je zeggen; deze is nog steeds mijn favoriet. Ondanks het emotionele verhaal dat er achter schuilgaat, word ik steeds gelukkig wanneer dit nummer aan de beurt is. Die melodie en dat refrein zijn prachtig, de tekst zelf is nog een grote meerwaarde. Ik krijg telkens weer kippenvel als ik die erbij neem terwijl ik de track beluister.
Ik ben nu niet per se iemand die heel fel op drums let, maar man... bij To The North weten die meteen mijn aandacht te pakken. Het ritme en de snelheid... bangelijk gewoon! Vooral in de intro en pre-chorus, maar eigenlijk overheersen ze gewoon het hele nummer, op de best mogelijke manier. Doe daar nog die scream op het einde bovenop en je weet gewoon dat dit een geweldige track is.
Bij Red Mist is het dan weet de melodie in de gitaar die mijn aandacht weet op te eisen. Ook de tempo shift in het refrein maakt dit een heel interessant nummer om naar te luisteren. Het album komt aan zijn einde met The Repentant. Ook deze laatste track heeft weer een enorm pakkende intro en weet met zijn emotionele screams een blijvende indruk achter te laten.
Rapture is zo'n album dat je een aantal keer moet beluisteren om te ontdekken hoe goed het nu net is. Hoe vaker je naar de nummers hoort, hoe meer details je opmerkt en hoe harder je ze gaat appreciëren. Bij de eerste luisterbeurt had ik namelijk zoiets van "hmmmja, ja, zeker niet slecht", maar al vanaf de tweede keer (écht aandachtig) luisteren, werd ik bijna omver geblazen bij de meeste aantal tracks.
Al bij al is dit weer een sterk staaltje melodische folk metal (is dat zelfs een genre? Ik heb geen idee hoe ik het anders moet omschrijven). Stevige riffs, geweldige drums, die typische, intrigerende vocals, meer moet dat niet zijn. Al ben ik nu wel extra benieuwd wat ze dan van plan zijn voor deel drie van deze trilogie, aangezien de eerste twee delen al zo verschillend klinken.

“We feel stronger than ever”, frontman and vocalist Damna states. “I believe after so many years we have gained full confidence in what we do and especially in what we want to achieve. The path in front of us is clear. We have left behind all fancies, inexperience and immaturity and we know inherently what is possible and what is not.” Words spoken truly: Since their inception in 1997, the band mastered their way to their own identity with courage and bravado, leaving behind the shackles of genres step by step before they truly broke out with their 2014 monument “The Pagan Manifesto”. For four albums now, Elvenking have been defying all genres, feeling quite at home in their very own enchanted realm.
“Rapture”, part two of their monumental “Reader of the Runes” trilogy, bears witness to this evolution: The chemistry of the band consisting of Damna (vocals), Aydan (guitars), Headmatt (guitars), Lethien (violin), Jakob (bass) and Symohn (drums) has become an almost tangible thing, a testimony to their collective willpower. “The chemistry inside the band is perfect at the moment,” Aydan nods. “Everyone in the band is perfectly aware of his role inside a complex mechanism such as Elvenking. This is fundamental in order to avoid cracks in the gear to proceed under full sail.” With the return of drummer Symohn and the addition of touring guitarist Headmatt as permanent member, Elvenking may very well have the best line-up so far, pairing fathomless passion with discipline and skill.
Migrating onto a new, altogether darker path while we follow this mysterious figure called the Reader of Runes deeper into the story, “Rapture” shows its long fangs in what are essentially some of the heaviest and most extreme songs Elvenking have ever unleashed. “The tone of the album is darker because the story needed the music to be tragic and violent,” vocalist Damna states. “This gave us the chance to dig deep into our extreme metal influences. We are mainly a melodic metal band – we know that – but we feel that with this album we have set a further gold standard in what this band is able to pull off.” Akin in dramatic flair and atmosphere to the second act of an opera, the divinations the Reader of the Runes made in the first part will turn into horrible reality on this one. Oh yes, there will be blood.
