Deze heeft misschien eerst even wat backstory nodig. Ik moet nu eerlijk toegeven dat ik de vorige albums van Bloodbound nog niet gehoord heb en de band eigenlijk nog niet zo lang ken. De titeltrack en opener; Creatures of the Dark Realm wist me echter wel volledig te overtuigen om dit album te reviewen. Dan kwam er een moment waarop men tegen me zei dat deze band eigenlijk gewoon een soort "Sabaton van den Aldi" is. Na enkel de titeltrack te horen, snapte ik het probleem niet. Toen March Into War dan uitkwam dacht ik... "ja lap he, ze hebben gelijk, waar ben ik aan begonnen?". En nu moet ik eerlijk toegeven, er zijn zo nog een paar nummers waarbij het refrein, de strofes of de riffs inderdaad aan Sabaton doen denken, maar dat is absoluut niet bij elke track het geval.
Er is een grote variatie in de verschillende nummers en je hoort ook invloeden van een aantal andere bands; zo kan ik bij Ever Burning Flame een soort mengeling tussen Dragonforce en Nightwish horen. Eyes Come Alive doet me in de strofes dan weer denken aan Avantasia en af en toe kan ik ook een beetje Sonata Arctica terug horen in de tracks. Mij ga je hier alvast niet over horen klagen, want alle bovengenoemde bands zijn enkele van mijn favorieten uit mijn tienerjaren; pure powermetal dus. Kortom; ja er zijn duidelijke invloeden van andere bands terug te vinden op dit album, maar dat neemt naar mijn gevoel niet weg dat het stuk voor stuk sterke nummers zijn.
Na de titeltrack is Kill or be Killed een van mijn persoonlijke favorieten. Vanaf de eerste noten ben ik meteen fan van de melodie. Afsluiter The Wicked and The Weak vind ik ook absoluut een bangelijk nummer. De keyboard sounds maken deze track en zorgen ervoor dat het album hier op een prachtige manier aan zijn einde komt. Conclusie? Ik ben zelf aangenaam verrast door Bloodbound en ga deze band zeker nog in de gaten houden. Creatures Of The Dark Realm staat vol met oorwurmen, zoals When Fate is Calling, die ondertussen al niet meer uit mijn hoofd gaan. Het is gewoon een stevig album dat fans van powermetal niet zal teleurstellen. Dus als dit jouw genre is, geeft deze dan zeker een kans!

When Swedish power metal band BLOODBOUND surfaced in 2005 with their debut album, "Nosferatu", it was an album that celebrated the band's admiration for metal icons like Iron Maiden, Helloween and Judas Priest, recorded on a small budget with no visions of grandeur behind it. With eight studio albums, a live record and an EP under their belts since then, BLOODBOUND have returned in 2021 with album #9, "Creatures Of The Dark Realm", and a renewed drive to take the band even further.
"Creatures Of The Dark Realm" descends with scarcely two years gone since "Rise Of The Dragon Empire" was unleashed. The three-headed songwriting team of keyboardist Fredrik Bergh, guitarist Tomas Olsson and vocalist Patrik Selleby started from scratch, compiling song ideas they collected individually and finally ending up with 11 solid in-your-face tracks kicked off by a deceptive acoustic intro. On paper, "Creatures Of The Dark Realm" satisfies all the requirements of what makes a power metal band, but the listening experience is one of epic proportions. Not a single ballad in sight, the new album is an-up-tempo assault through the songs "Eyes Come Alive", "The Gargoyles Gate", "Ever Burning Flame", "The Wicked And The Weak" and the title track. BLOODBOUND is not afraid to change things up, however, offering up a heavy groove anthem with "Kill Or Be Killed" and straight-ahead commercial metal on first single, "When Fate Is Calling", always keeping things fresh from one song to the next.
BLOODBOUND has one simple goal going into making "Creatures Of The Dark Realm": make it better than the album before it. The call was to make sure it had more hooks and stronger melodies, and the results speak for themselves. "Creatures Of The Dark Realm" is a very melodic and an ultimately catchy album, sharing airspace with the likes of Sabaton and Powerwolf, going so far as to recall the days of classic Helloween. In that respect, BLOODBOUND have remained true to the metal that inspired them in the first place.
