Beeld je in dat Miley Cyrus country music was blijven maken en ze de authenticiteit en verhalende kracht van haar peetmoeder Dolly Parton had geërfd. De uit Pennsylvania afkomstige, in Nashville wonende Zandi Holup doet me met haar manier van zingen en doorleefde, rauwe stem in die richting denken.
Via TikTok en Instagram wist ze een trouwe schare volgers aan zich te binden. Nope, geen covers, wel zelfgeschreven nummers liet ze daar horen. Op 27 september 2023 mocht ze haar waitress schortje aan de haak hangen: Big Loud Records tekende haar nadat ze niet meer om sterke songs als Mary Jane en Gas Station Flowers heen konden. Die laatste song werd meteen haar eerste officiële single.
Sinds het uitbrengen van haar debuutsingle heeft Holup rustig de tijd genomen om te schrijven en her en der te performen. Dat eerste album waarvan ik dacht dat het er ergens einde 2023/begin 2024 zou komen, is er dus nog steeds niet, ook geen bombardement aan singles. Geen probleem wat mij betreft, toch niet wanneer ze dergelijke kwaliteit aan songs blijft brengen én die zo prachtig weet te 'vertellen'.
Go Find Less laat opnieuw dartelende banjo picking horen naast wat fiddle melodieën. Niets staat echter die fantastische stem in de weg: Holup klinkt eerlijk, doorleefd en laat ook nu weer subtiel dat rauwe kantje horen. Tweede troef: haar songwriting en storytelling skills. Ik luister niet zomaar naar een liedje maar word meegezogen in haar verhaal. Prachtig!

“'Go Find Less' is a song about reclaiming my power — a voice rising from the ashes of vulnerability,” Holup shares. “Much of my writing has long stemmed from a place of victimhood, but this piece marks a rare moment where I step beyond pain to confront the perpetrator, turning my strength inward. In truth, I believe both paths are valid; yet this song stands as a testament to the moment I chose to find my voice not in my suffering, but in my resilience.”
Written alongside Autumn Buysse, Brock Butler and Ben Johnson the new song takes on a mood of willful self-possession as Holup voices her refusal to compromise her complexity for the sake of pleasing a man:

Who's strong and free as a summer breeze
I don't need you to be happy
And that scares you to death...

Not only a prolific writer but also performer, the Pennsylvania-born, Nashville-based artist has shared the stage with Steve Earle, Amanda Shires, Jamey Johnson, Wyatt Flores, 49 Winchester, Midland and more. Holup has upcoming festival billings at Under the Big Sky Festival, WE Fest 2025 and AMERICANAFEST.
