Heerlijk hoe de mannen van Vestige op deze nieuwe single op vakkundige wijze muzikale mokerslagen uitdelen, maar er wel in slagen om hun sound zodanig op te spannen dat er toch nog ruimte blijft om er een vleugje melancholie te laten insluipen.

Envy is een standalone single. Vestige is immers nog volop aan het touren voor de promotie van hun vorig jaar verschenen debuutalbum, Janis.

“Envy” fuses post-metal atmospheres with an intense melodic edge, capturing the volatile space between fragility and fury. The song unfolds slowly and deliberately—clean, sorrowful passages give way to eruptive distortion, as shoegaze textures collide with razor-sharp riffing and pummeling drums.

Rooted in a deeply autobiographical moment, vocalist and songwriter Théodore Rondeau revisits a period of domestic abuse, confronting the psychological control and humiliation inflicted by a parental figure’s jealous partner. The lyrics shift between emotional exposure and defiance: “You never broke me / You tried,” he asserts, before pleading “Let me shine away from your controlling games.” In moments of stark vulnerability, the song becomes an act of naming and reclaiming: “Envy is always seen / It hides from your words.”
