GQ noemt Snipe Hunter “the most visionary country album of the year,” en slaat daarmee misschien wel de nagel op de kop. Op zijn nieuwe album trekt ‘outlaw’ Tyler Childers zich geen hol aan van genre conventies. Van country kampvuurballades over neo-traditionele country tot een bluesrockstomper als dit Eatin’ Big Time. De opening track van zijn zevende studio album zet je misschien wel op het verkeerde been. Anderzijds geeft dit meteen weer dat je niet zomaar een c&w album moet verwachten. Met Rick Rubin als producer kan je ook niet anders verwachten.
De tekst bulkt ook van ‘ongepast’ taalgebruik, wat me meteen doet afvragen hoe het dan met airplay in de V.S. moet. De éne bleep na de andere, enkel op de nachtelijke playlists of gewoon helemaal geen radio? Stel je voor de bloedjes van kindjes zouden hierdoor geshockeerd zijn.
