Probeer maar eens om het bij zo'n sex-getinte video om de muziek te houden! Wel, ik doe hard mijn best. Ik ben pas fan geworden van Taylor Momsen - ik zeg bewust niet TPR - since ik haar tijdens de tribute voor Chris Cornell Rusty Cage en vooral Loud Love hoorde zingen. DAMN wat een strot heeft die dame. Meteen zag ik haar als de énige gepaste kandidaat om in de voetsporen te treden van Cornell bij Soundgarden. Toch voor een soort eerbetoon-tour. Ik ben er nog steeds rotsvast van overtuigd dat enkel zij de man eer aan zou kunnen doen. Straffe uitspraak, I know.
Wat haar band The Pretty Reckless betreft blijft het een beetje een warm-koud verhaal. Ook op hun laatste album Death by Rock and Roll datzelfde gevoel: enerzijds machtige, naar de keel grijpende rock anthems, anderzijds pop rock niemendalletjes waarbij ik het hoofd schud en denk 'waarom?'. De nieuwe single is wat vreemd en moet waarschijnlijk in het kader van een nieuw album beluisterd worden. De 'intro' (?) Life Evermore Pt.2 laar Led Zeppelin kruisen met Queen. Niet onaardig, maar ik kan het moeilijk plaatsen. For I Am Death is dan een potige, simpele rocker zoals ze er al zoveel hebben gemaakt: niets speciaal, maar het heeft wel wat ferme momenten. En dat Momsen een strot uit de duizend heeft, hoeft geen betoog meer. Speaking about the song, Taylor said “With ‘For I Am Death,’ I want the music to speak for itself, allowing the listener to decide what it means to them. The interpretation of the song might align with my own, or it might come from the heart of the audience. Either way, I’m excited to see what people take away from it and what it means to them. Oh, and rock and roll will never die.”
The music video directed by Lewis Cater was released alongside the single, which sees Taylor transform into a malevolent, haunting figure. Surrounded by sinister forces, she represents the personification of death that she embodied when writing the song.
The song arrives following their support slot on AC/DC’s massive Power Up stadium tour across North America and Europe, which saw them play to over 3 million people in iconic venues such as LA’s Rose Bowl, Chicago’s Soldier Field, London’s Wembley Stadium, and Paris’ Stade de France, among others.
