Of ik zin had om de nieuwe single van Stonemule eens te beluisteren en er eventueel my two centsĀ over te delen? Hell yes, laat maar komen, zei ik. Met Caught in ParanoiaĀ en Unfair FightĀ hadden ze eerder dit jaar al twee uppercuts van songs op de wereld losgelaten, dus een lekkere kopstoot om het jaar af te sluiten kon er ook nog wel bij.
De speelduur van 7:38Ā deed me wel even fronsen, maar komāhoe erg kon het zijn?
Een kwartier later (de repeatknop aanvaardde geen onderhandeling) mocht je me bij wijze van spreken van de grond rapen: uitgeteld na een resem niet aflatende aanvallen van het Brugse viertal stonden de devil horns in mijn vingers en de grimlach op mijn gezicht er zo vast op dat alleen een chirurg ze nog van me had kunnen loswrikken.
Rule Of The Best BornĀ is niet zomaar een ramfestijn. Het is een niet-aflatend, steeds verrassend salvo van riffs, afwisselende zanglijnen en drumrolls dat je meesleurt en niet meer loslaat, in een heerlijk ruige mix van stoner en hardcore.
Telkens wanneer je denkt dat er een adempauze wordt ingelast, blijkt die enkel te dienen als aanloop naar een nieuw hoogtepunt.

Born in the West Flemish underground, Stonemule erupted onto the scene in 2014 with raw, unfiltered hardcore/punk energy. Founded by Tom Vandaele (Urge for Blood, GOD), Benjamin Himpens, Ruben Dewilde, and Dries Herreman, the band quickly gained a reputation for their intense live shows. A shift came in 2015 when bassist Dries departed, making way for Wannes Breyne and the introduction of dual vocalsāsetting the stage for something heavier.
By 2016, Stonemule hit pause, re-emerging in 2017 with a sludgier, doom-soaked sound.
Their 2018 debut EP, Dystopian State, recorded on a shoestring budget, made serious waves. Fusing hardcore, stoner metal, and doom, it earned critical acclaimāGBHBL hailed it as āEP of the yearā, while Merchants of Air praised its āsheer energy and hardcore-infused stoner metal.ā
In 2021, they dropped āBitterā, a single featured on Polderriffs Volume II. Then, the world stood still. Lineup changes and a pandemic-induced hiatus kept things quiet for over two years.
Now, 2025 marks Stonemuleās return. Armed with new members Jon Huyghe and Tom Schelfaut, theyāre recharged, heavier than ever, and ready to shake the foundations with new music and blistering live shows.
The beast has awakened.
