Sounds | Marianas Rest - Diamonds in the Rough

Wanneer ik zeg dat dit als standaard melodic doom/death klinkt dan bedoel ik absoluut als een compliment en een statement. Als het goed klinkt moet je het niet noodzakelijk proberen te veranderen. Deze song heeft immers al genoeg om je bij je nekvel mee te grijpen. Rauwe en cleane vocals mooi afgewisseld. Goede balans tussen strofes en refrein en een absoluut beklijvend middenstuk. Diamonds in the Rough heet dit lekker stukje muziek en daarop krijgen de Finnen de hulp van niemand minder dan Okko Solanterä (ons bekend van onder meer Horizon Ignited en Slaughterror). Het is, na The Colour of You, de tweede vooruitgeschoven videosingle uit het aankomende album The Bereaved dat op 16 januari uitkomt via Noble Demon.

Vocalist Jaakko Mäntymaa reflects on the song’s lyrical theme:

"I have always had an issue with how we tend to remember those passed. You know, concentrating excessively on the good sides of a person and downplaying imperfections, the whole 'don’t speak ill of the dead' thing. What could honor a person more than seeing and remembering him as a whole, flaws and all? This song celebrates memories that stick to what really happened."

Guitarist Nico Mänttäri adds:

"Even though usually our music is more about slowly building atmospheres and long and lingering songs, on occasion it is nice to venture a bit more -to the point- rock’n roll type of stuff. This piece ended up being one of those experiments. We had had talks with our dear friend Okko (Solanterä) about doing a feature on this album, and once he ripped his vocal delivery on the chorus of the song, all just fell into place. Really looking forward to playing this one live."
