De meest productieve band in de muziekbuziness zijn ze nooit geweest en zullen ze ook nooit worden (gezonde ambitie moet er immers zijn, niet?) maar nu hebben ze ons toch wel héél lang laten wachten op nieuwe muziek. Het mooie Following Sea dateert immers alweer uit 2012.
Het is nu ook weer niet dat er in die tien jaar niets gebeurd is, noch voor ons, noch voor de band en dEUS blijven toch wel een beetje de internationale vaandeldragers van de Belgische alternatieve muziek. En om dan terug te keren met een mooie track als Must Have Been New verzacht het leed van het lange wachten toch wel een beetje.
Must Have Been New klinkt als vertrouwde dEUS en tegelijkertijd toch ook weer dat tikje anders. Het down tempo nummer wordt vooral gedragen door het mooie pianospel van Klaas Janzoons.
Voor het nieuwe album How to Replace It is het nog even wachten tot 17.02.2023 (via PIAS). De reeds aangekondigde Europese tournee brengt hen op 14 en 15 maart 2023 naar de AB, Brussel en langs verscheidene locaties in Nederland (oa Tivoli Vredenburg en Doornroosje Nijmegen).

Distinctive and inventive, melodic yet defiantly off-kilter. Unique. And above all, unmistakably dEUS. Must Have Been New ticks all the boxes. A short intro gives way to an assured and fiery Tom Barman with rambling acoustic guitars dusted off by distorted licks and percussion. Gospel-like backing vocals add a fresh and majestic feel to the chorus, turning this into an epic and remarkable trip just shy of 4 minutes. A genuine group effort, all members sharing writing credits, the song presented itself during one of the short, explosive jam sessions the band organized.
“I was playing the piano and I asked our drummer Steph to give me a waltz rhythm”, founding member and multi-instrumentalist Klaas Janzoons remembers, “I instantly came up with the verse and chorus chords, Tom added a middle eight and we had the core of the song. But in typical dEUS fashion, it took a whole lot of time and energy to get to the final result.”
