Ik heb altijd een dikke boon gehad voor The Shakes. Howard, Cockrell en Fogg - eerst met Steve Johnson op drums - maakten het zichzelf echter nooit makkelijk. Hun soulvolle songs waren steeds doorspekt van blues en (southern) rock en waren gewoonlijk best 'vuil' zoals een garagerockband klinkt. Slechts twee albums brachten ze uit alvorens Brittany Howard zich op haar solo carrière zou focussen. Maar het bloed kruipt waar het niet gaan kan en zo stonden ze afgelopen december geheel verrassend (voor de fans) in het Bama Theatre in Tuscaloosa, Alabama en kondigden ze nieuwe muziek aan. Het doet me enorm plezier dat er in al die tijd niets gewijzigd is aan hun sound. Another Life klinkt net zo soulvol bluesy als rauw en rock&roll. Howard zalft, krabt en klauwt zowel vocaal als met haar gitaar. Dampende keys, doffe drums en een stuwende basgitaar injecteren bakken emotie en power in de song. En dan krijg je die scheurende solo als kers op de taart. Speaking to the track, Howard notes, “When I wrote Another Life, I was thinking about all the lives we carry. The ones we're living right now, the ones that slipped away because of different choices, the what ifs, the what wasn't meant to be, the goodbyes, and the chance encounters that feel divine. This song is about those threads and how they stretch across time and space, connecting every version of who we are. It's about letting them come together, letting them harmonize, and realizing that goodbye isn't really goodbye. It's more like I’ll see you later. A collective story that never stops unfolding. I'm glad we opened this door into this reality of us making music together again.”
