Comté’s compositions complemented by inventive adaptations of more familiar repertoire, provided ample space for exploration, each musician stepping forward with confident, well-shaped solos in a fluid dialogue, while maintaining a cohesive ensemble sound, showing their long time chemistry built after years working together. In the intimate Marni setting, the quartet showcased the strength of Belgium’s contemporary jazz scene: focused, collaborative, and musically refined.
