Wajdi Riahi’s solo performance today at the Flagey Jazz Festival started as a quiet but daring journey across musical worlds. He moved seamlessly from a Bach prelude into ’Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk, treating each piece not as a monument but as living material. Giant Steps followed, stripped down yet fearless, its complexity reshaped through touch and timing rather than speed.

The set closed with Nawres, a piece he usually performs in trio form, here transformed into something deeply personal. Playing piano while activating a small prop attached to his ankle, Riahi expanded the instrument’s physical and rhythmic possibilities, turning solitude into layered dialogue. It was intimate, inventive, and quietly captivating.
