Amerika’s meest inventieve rootsartieste stelt haar nieuwe album voor.
Rhiannon Giddens werd opgeleid als operazangeres, maar haar liefde voor folk, country en blues bleek groter. Die mix vinden we dan ook terug op haar derde soloalbum ‘You’re The One’ (release augustus 2023 op Nonesuch Records), dat ze in AB komt voorstellen. Als zwarte vrouw voelde ze zich eerst een indringer in de overwegend witte wereld van country en string band music, tot ze ontdekte dat de wortels van die muziek intercultureel waren, zowel zwart als wit. Met Carolina Chocolate Drops claimde ze de string band music opnieuw voor zwarte artiesten. Haar werk werd intussen beloond met verschillende Grammy’s en zelfs een Pulitzer prijs. De nummers voor de nieuwe plaat schreef ze voor het eerst helemaal zelf, maar in de studio omringde ze zich met producer Jack Splash (bekend van zijn werk met o.a. Kendrick Lamar, Solange en Valerie June) en topmuzikanten waaronder multi-instrumentalisten Francesco Turrisi (Lisa Hannigan, Bobby McFerrin) en Dirk Powell (Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, Jack White, Levon Helm,..) bassist Jason Sypher (Clifton Chenier) , Congolese gitarist Niwel Tsumbu en drummer Attis Clopton. Giddens over de plaat: ‘I hope that people just hear American music. Blues, jazz, Cajun, country, gospel, and rock—it's all there. I like to be where it meets organically. They're fun songs, and I wanted them to have as much of a chance as they could to reach people who might dig them but don't know anything about what I do’.
