Vijf jaar geleden kende ik de naam Kent Hilli nog niet, nu behoort de man tot mijn absolute top favoriete zangers. Ondanks de massa aan uitgebracht melodieus rockmateriaal, stak zo’n vier jaar geleden het debuut ‘All Rise’ van Perfect Plan er met kop en schouders bovenuit. Twee jaar later bevestigden ze dat ze uit het goede hout gesneden waren en deden de kunstjes opnieuw met ‘Time For A Miracle’. Kent verscheen intussen al vaak als gastvocalist, maakt intussen ook deel uit van Giant en heeft nog recentelijk een eigen soloplaat uitbracht, toch heeft hij voet bij stuk gehouden wat Perfect Plan betreft. Zodoende ligt hun nieuw materiaal opnieuw na twee jaar in de rekken.
Wat aarzelend steekt Surrender voet van wal, maar eens op kruissnelheid pakt het gezelschap je mee op een dolle rit, die in het refrein melodie en progressieve interactie laat horen. Een wisselend arrangement zet het vocale bereik van Kent in de spotlights, zowel in de krachtige als ingetogen passages. Wie een kopie van vorig materiaal verwacht, is er gelukkig aan voor de moeite. De knappe mid-tempo rocker If Love Walks In gaat tegen die voorspellingen in. Het vijf minuten durende oorwormpje is het levende bewijs dat mooie liedjes wel degelijk lang kunnen duren. Het groovy Can’t Let You Win zorgt dan wel weer voor een aangename flashback naar vorig materiaal. Het rauwe snarenwerk in Gotta Slow Me Down gaat hand in hand met een ferme laag toetsen, die de rockende motor soepel laat brullen. Devil’s Got The Blues doet soms aan het stevig rockwerk van Europe denken. Puur genieten van de vocale schoonheid in het perfecte muzikale jasje, telkens opnieuw.
Maar de sterkte van het album zit hem ook vaak in de variatie van de nummers. Zo neigen het rustig opbouwende maar furieuze Stop The Bleed en het wat verder op de schijf terug te vinden Emelie meer over richting AOR. De enige ballad My Angel is mooi in het midden van het album geplaatst. Die is misschien wat aan de melige kant, maar breekbaarder dan ooit. Na dit rustpunt zorgt het bluesy Devils Got The Blues voor de perfecte overgang naar het energieke Bring Me A Doctor en Still Undefeated, dat terug zorgt dat die adrenaline volop door je aders stroomt. Het gezelschap verlaat ons met Walk Through Fire, dat ondanks zijn titel relatief rustig blijft. We mogen de vocale uitspattingen hierbij niet in rekening nemen, want Kent grijpt deze laatste kans om zijn gouden strot helemaal open te zetten.
Is deze derde schijf beter dan voorgaande? Ik zou het niet kunnen zeggen, feit is dat deze wat steviger in elkaar zit en hier en daar anders klinkt. De grote AOR-tradities blijven behouden, enkel hier en daar werden de snaren wat strakker gespannen en alles wat harder opgeblonken. Geen paniek, de Zweden gaan niet richting melodieuze metal. Deze ‘Brace For Impact' laat horen dat de band evolueert zonder hun muzikale identiteit te verliezen. Ze ontwikkelen zichzelf verder maar blijven hun sublieme zang en instrumentale vaardigheden hoog in het vaandel houden. Hun dynamische aanpak zorgt ook hier voor een sterke muzikale beleving, waar keyboard vaak de final touch vormt om net dat extra beetje souplesse erbij te steken. Wie nu nog durft beweren dat melodieuze rock allemaal gelijk klinkt, zal met dit album meer dan overtuigd worden.

Frontiers Music Srl is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of Perfect Plan's third studio album, "Brace For Impact". Over the course of their first two albums, "All Rise" and "Time For A Miracle", the Swedes have quickly established themselves as a new gold standard in not only the Scandinavian melodic rock genre, but the melodic rock genre as a whole. "Brace For Impact" does nothing to slow that momentum and fans should do exactly as the album's title says in preparation for their latest opus.
Produced by the band, songwriting started in August 2021 for "Brace For Impact" and was wrapped up by the end of the year. The band then spent January of this year working on arrangements and pre-production work before starting the process of recording in the first week of February.
Asked about the musical direction of the album, vocalist Kent Hilli says, "Well, hard question...we didn’t think too much about that when we started writing as we want everything to come naturally to us. All we focused on and wanted to do was to write really great melodic rock songs with great riffs and melodies. But I think we have more ”rockers” on this album than before. I would say that it's melodic rock in general, but maybe slightly harder than our previous albums. But much like our second album, ”Time For A Miracle” we have a great mixture between hard rock, melodic rock, and AOR in there...and some songs even have some elements of progressive rock and some bluesier elements mixed in also. And we have just one ballad on this album. Our goal when writing an album is that it should feel like playing songs on a jukebox and I think we have succeeded with that on this album. Everything sounds like PERFECT PLAN 3.0, really! I think we have definitely pushed everything up a notch from songwriting and lyrics to arrangements and overall performance and sound. With the addition of the great Tobias Lindell who does the mixing…everything sounds really big and majestic I think!"
Sometimes the stars align and create a perfect balance of talent within a group. A band like Perfect Plan is the “perfect" (pun intended) example of that: a superb singer, a well-oiled band of experienced players, and a great songwriting talent with a knack for unforgettable melodies and driving rhythms. Add to that the right single released at the right time and Perfect Plan’s emergence as immediate rising stars on the melodic rock scene is no surprise. The song that “built” their reputation is of course the awesome “In and Out of Love,” the first single/video that kicked off the promotion of the band’s 2018 debut album “All Rise,” released on Frontiers in April of that year. The band followed their debut album with the sophomore release "Time For A Miracle" in 2020. Hyperbole aside, it was a major step forward across the board. Opting for a slightly heavier and more “in your face” sound, Perfect Plan matured and created an outstanding balance of melodies and energy, with the obvious references to the sound of the classics (think Foreigner, Survivor, The Storm, Giant, etc.) and Scandinavian AOR with a recognizable and personal feel.
So, after a stunning debut and sticking the landing with their second album, what does Perfect Plan have up their sleeve for an encore? Well, all we can say is..."Brace For Impact”!
