Dat deze schijf terug een pure krachtmeting zal worden kunnen we bij deze alvast zonder luisteren noteren. Magnus Karlsson heeft muzikaal nog nooit teleurgesteld, integendeel. De man bespeelt nagenoeg elk instrument, gaande van gitaar, bas en keyboard. Enkel de drum liet hij voor Anders Köllerfors.
Maar ook het vocaal vermogen op deze nieuwe schijf is terug om de vingers af te likken. Magnus neemt ook enkele keren zelf plaats achter de microfoon, maar we noteren ook de indrukwekkende gastvocalisten Noora Louhimo (Battle Beast), Dino Jelusick (Animal Drive), Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, CoreLeoni), Renan Zonta (Electric Mob), Tony Martin (ex-Black Sabbath) and Mike Andersson (Cloudscape).
De schreeuw die Renan Zonta brult in de intro van ‘Kingdom Falls’ staat in schril contrast met de zachtere aanpak waarmee hij het nummer start. Maar naar het refrein laat ook hij de achterkant van zijn tong zien en doet het melodieuze nummer alle eer aan, zeker als hij naar het einde ook de hogere regionen opzoekt.
Dat ook Magnus Karlsson zelf van uiterst aangename stembanden beschikt, horen we in ‘We Are The Night’. Naast de intense drumpartijen van Anders Köllerfors zet ook Magnus terug zijn vingers aan het werk voor solerend snarenwerk.
De fluwelen stem waarmee Noora Louhimo ‘Queen Of Fire’ begint, laat niet vermoeden dat bij het refrein het beest in haar los zal barsten. Waar de vocale lijnen als een rustige popdiva lijken te beginnen, explodeert dit plots recht in je gezicht. Wat die uit haar strot kan duwen, grenst vaak aan het ongelooflijke. De queen of fire is terug van nooit weggeweest te zijn.
De combinatie van zangers is een troef die niet nieuw is (zie Avantasia) maar telkens meer dan de som der elementen oplevert. Dat Magnus ook vaak het zeil naar zijn eigen toetrekt zullen we hem zeker niet kwalijk nemen, zijn gitaarpartijen zijn opvallend.

Lees Magnus Karlsson is well known as the mastermind behind several Frontiers productions, including the successful initial Allen/Lande trilogy and the recent spin-off album, Allen/Olzon as well as releases by Starbreaker (with Tony Harnell), Bob Catley, and Kiske/Somerville. In 2008, he joined German heavy metal icons Primal Fear and with them has toured the world and recorded several successful albums which charted in multiple countries around the globe.
In 2013, he launched his solo project “Free Fall” which was warmly received by the numerous fans of the Swedish mastermind and showcased Magnus’ songwriting and production skills with lead vocals provided by a varied cast of some the finest singers of the genre.
For this new album, “We Are The Night”, Magnus again enlisted a dream team of singers featuring some of the strongest melodic singers in metal and hard rock! The list includes the awesome Noora Louhimo (BATTLE BEAST), Dino Jelusick (ANIMAL DRIVE, DIRTY SHIRLEY), Ronnie Romero (RAINBOW), the newest vocal star on the Frontiers’ label, Renan Zonta (ELECTRIC MOB), Tony Martin (ex-BLACK SABBATH), and Mike Andersson (CLOUDSCAPE).
Rounding out the line-up on the album is Anders Kollerfors on drums with mixing by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Primal Fear, Amaranthe, Pretty Maids, etc.). An absolute bast of a release which can’t be missed by all lovers of European melodic metal!
