Hun laatste cd (Wonderful, Wonderful) leek mij nog relatief recent, maar tot mijn eigen verbazing moest ik vaststellen dat deze toch al weer dateert van begin 2017. Het album en hun resem klassiekers (Mr. Brightside, Somebody told me, Human, ...) waren vorig jaar wel genoeg om zowel het sportpaleis uit te verkopen alsde weide van Rock Werchter plat te spelen.
Qua sound is Land of the free een echte ballad, zoals er wel meer te horen waren op dat laatste album. het is bovendien een rasechte protest song tegen de huidige Amerikaanse machthebbers. De videoclip is ook zeker eens het bekijken waard en werd geregisseerd door Spike Lee. In de clip zie je beelden van vluchtelingen aan de Amerikaans-Mexicaanse grens.

“It started in my mind, around when the Sandy Hook shooting happened and as a father how that affected me and then it just started stacking up. It was things like Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, things like what’s happening at the wall. This stuff didn’t seem to be in harmony with the values that I believe my country was founded on.”
“I would start the song and then I would put it away and say ‘I’m not the guy to do this. I feel inadequate, someone is gonna write this song’ and then it just piled up with Las Vegas, Orlando, Parkland . It just kept coming and I just thought , ‘I have to get this out’.”
