Robert Jon & The Wreck en het Belgische publiek, dat is altijd al een goede match geweest. Maar Robert Jon & The Wreck en de AB, dat is een perfecte match. Getuige daarvan is het live album Live at the Ancienne Belgique dat de band in 2023 uitbracht. Die show werd weliswaar in de club opgenomen maar wij twijfelen er geen seconde aan dat Robert en zijn maten in de grote zaal diezelfde vibe zullen weten op te roepen. Sinds hun oprichting in 2011 weten deze geboren Californiërs, Robert Jon Burrison (leadzang, gitaar), Andrew Espantman (drums, achtergrondzang), Henry James Schneekluth (leadgitaar, achtergrondzang) en Warren Murrel (bas) – wereldwijd het publiek te veroveren met fenomenale gitaarsolo's, rijke vocale harmonieën en memorabele songs. Onlangs sloot toetsenist Jake Abernathie zich officieel bij de band aan, terwijl de groep onafgebroken blijft toeren en nieuwe muziek blijft uitbrengen. Het is dan ook moeilijk deze getalenteerde Amerikaanse muzikanten te negeren. Met sterke composities, energieke optredens en een indrukwekkende lijst samenwerkingen, waaronder shows naast grootheden als Joe Bonamassa, Buddy Guy, Blackberry Smoke, The Mavericks, Little Feat en Rival Sons, hebben Robert Jon & The Wreck hun positie in de internationale rockscene stevig verankerd. Hun opmars leidde tot een platencontract bij Journeyman Records, het label van Joe Bonamassa, waarmee de band een nieuw hoofdstuk in hun carrière betrad. Hun nieuwste album, Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes, vangt de essentie van hun eerdere werk en slaat tegelijk een gedurfde nieuwe richting in.

Ze stonden afgelopen jaar op Dynamo Metalfest en lieten daar zien waarom ze tot de absolute top behoren. Nu komt Mastodon naar Leeuwarden en nemen ze de zaterdagavond mee de diepte in! Mastodon is al ruim twintig jaar een vaste waarde in de moderne metalscene. Met een sound die zich niets aantrekt van hokjesdenken en moeiteloos schakelt tussen brute kracht en complexe melodieën. Corrosion of Conformity frontman Pepper Keenan is wat mij betreft de vleesgeworden verpersoonlijking van de term 'Groove Metal', een mening waarin ik zeker niet alleen sta. Al meer dan 35 jaar geselt Keenan onze oren met vermorzelende riffs in zijn bands Corrosion of Conformity en het al even legendarische Down. Uit die band rekruteerde Keenan, nadat oer-CoC bassist Mike Dean de band in 2024 verliet, ook bassist Bobby "Rock" Langraf voor de opnames van het nieuwe album Good God / Baad Man dat afgelopen vrijdag uitkwam via Nuclear Blast Records. Na de enkele luisterbeurten die ik het album al heb ik kunnen geven, kan ik alvast concluderen: klasse! Zeker één van de betere albums van de band. Na de eerdere singles You or Me en Gimme Some More wordt de release van het album ondersteund door de track Asleep on the Killing Floor waarbij ook deze punk noir ogende video hoort. De Zweedse stonerrockformatie Truckfighters brengt na 10 jaar weer een nieuw album uit. En op deze 'Masterflow' albumtour komen ze naar Nederland, voor o.a. een show in Bibelot op 1 mei 2026. Truckfighters laat zich het best omschrijven als een mix van stoner-, desert- en psychedelische rock. Volgens Josh Homme (Kyuss, QOTSA) zijn ze "The best band that’s ever existed" en wie zijn wij om de eminentie van de desertrock tegen te spreken? Support: Skraeckoedlan (SE) Skraeckoedlan is een band die sci-fi boeken schrijft, videogames en arcademachines bedenkt met dezelfde concepten in verschillende universums. Ze maken ook heavy fuzzrock, met melodieuze Zweedse lyrics die metaforische sci-fi verhalen vertellen en dromerige wezens op kosmische doeken tot leven brengen. Ik begin eerlijk gezegd wel van de regelmaat van Joanne Shaw Taylor te houden. Had ik u immers begin maart niet beloofd dat we elkaar deze maand opnieuw zouden spreken? Belofte maakt schuld en dus presenteer ik u hier haar gloednieuwe single/video The Trouble With Love en wederom is dat een klassebak van een song. Stevig tempo (altijd goed voor wat meer beweging), een catchy groove en fijn gitaarwerk. Wat wil een mens nog meer? Wel, misschien de details over haar aankomende nieuwe album? The Damn Liars @Muziekzolder (Maasdijk,NL) Een stelletje verrekte leugenaars stonden donderdag 2 april op de tapijten van de Muziekzolder in Maasdijk. Tijdens het optreden wist de band The Damn Liars het publiek mee te nemen in een karakteristieke muzikale stijl. Hun sound bevindt zich tussen vintage rock-’n-roll, country/Americana en blues. Duidelijke invloeden van honky-tonk, blues en klassieke Amerikaanse rock zijn hoorbaar, waarbij de nadruk meer ligt op een rootsy, authentieke sound dan op moderne, harde rock. De band wordt omschreven als rauw en “old-school”. Dit komt niet alleen tot uiting in de muziek, maar ook in hun uitstraling en performance. De teksten bevatten veel storytelling, waardoor elk nummer een eigen verhaal vertelt en het publiek actief wordt meegenomen in de beleving. Dat Griekenland meer te bieden heeft dan de Zorba en bouzouki's wisten wij natuurlijk al langer dan vandaag. Maar om één of andere reden geraken Griekse metalbands schijnbaar moeilijker tot bij ons dan een pakje fetakaas. Wanneer ons dan iets wordt aangeboden als zijnde een "Greek post-black metal collective" spitsen wij graag onze oren. Euphrosyne bracht al twee full albums uit (in 2022 en 2025) die ik nog moet ontdekken. Dit Mother Earth Betrayed Us is alvast de voorbode uit hun nieuwe album dat momenteel nog volop in de maak is. En dit is zeker steengoede post-black, met gitaarlagen die zich opspannen als de betere latexverf, een drummer die soms bovenmenselijke tempo's ontwikkelt, maar vooral een zangeres die alle aspecten van haar vocale capaciteiten etaleert, van mooie cleane zang tot felle (maar dan niet van die snijdende ijle zoals bij sommige andere post-black metalacts) screams. Euphrosyne is er met andere woorden dus eentje om in de gaten te houden. ONLY HUMAN presenteert debuutalbum Planned Obsolescence De Deense progmetalband ONLY HUMAN  heeft op vrijdag 27 maart 2026 haar debuutalbum Planned Obsolescenc e uitgebracht, een existentialistische reis door een wereld op de rand van technologische ondergang. Het album is beschikbaar via Season of Mist . Op Planned Obsolescence combineert de band invloeden van recente progsubgenres (post-Tool, post-Periphery/TesseracT) met elektronische elementen, waardoor een unieke sound ontstaat die zowel technisch als emotioneel resoneert. Zanger Patrick Grønbæch Christensen vertelt over het nieuwe album: "The album is supposed to wake people up to all the ways technocracy is encroaching on society. Tech companies often design their products to have an expiration date, so that we’re forced to replace them with the newest model. Through our social media and the adoption of influencer culture, we now live in a reality where humans are products to be consumed and disposed of." Doodseskader slaat terug toe. Niet met Year Three  — dat verhaal kent u wellicht al — maar met The Change Is Me : tien nummers, geschreven en opgenomen in zeven dagen. Goed voor 100% duivelsuitdrijving. Hoe Year Three  precies klonk, en wat de verandering was waardoor ze hem de trashcan in zwierden, zullen we misschien nooit weten. Maar eerlijk: een beetje mysterie kan geen kwaad. Zeker niet als het een album als The Change Is Me  oplevert. Gutpunch na uppercut, genadeloos rekenen Tim De Gieter en Siefgried Burroughs af met heden, verleden en alles wat op hun weg komt. Hun unieke mix van hiphop, industrial, beats en razernij houdt je ook deze keer van begin tot einde vast, om je dan uitgeteld nog eens de ring in te sturen. Omdat het kan. Tim De Gieter and Sigfried Burroughs return on April 3rd, 2026 with their third full-length album, The Change Is Me , a rollercoaster that can only be described as the unstable lovechild between witch house, hip-hop, industrial dream pop, and stadium rock that can’t decide if it wants to watch the world burn or shout from the rooftops that we need to save it. Their combination of grungy 90s melodies with distorted synths, sludgy bass, hard tuned vocals, rapping, singing, and explosions of undiluted rage at the current state of the world leave you wondering just exactly what it was you smoked last night, and if it was too much or not enough. The Change Is Me  is an album that grabs you by the arm and asks if you’re ready to go on a grand adventure, then pulls you into its chaos before you can say “yes” or “no.” Tim and Sigfried aren’t just breaking the boundaries between genres; they’re breaking out of their own Year cycle, a path they had laid out for themselves at the band’s inception in 2020. Up until now, the duo had set out to document their “journey to getting better” through writing one album each year: Year Zero  (2020), Year One  (2022), and most recently Year Two  (2024). After spending eight months throughout 2024 and 2025 writing, recording, producing and mixing Year Three , the band scrapped the finished record entirely. Playing shows while simultaneously navigating the process of mixing Year Three  created a sort of disconnect – the people that they were when they wrote that record and the people that playing shows made them become were no longer one and the same. “We’re people with faults and strengths, and we realized we needed to accept it. That’s equal parts bleak and liberating. If you’re so focused on self-improvement, you can’t even applaud yourself for how far you’ve come,” the band explains. “This project is meant to be a document of us and of the human condition, not a self-improvement handbook designed to keep us all stuck on what may or may not have happened to us or because of us in the past.” DOODSESKADER chose instead to embark anew on a week-long creative journey in Tim’s own Much Luv Studio with one goal in mind: to make an album that captures who they are right now. Finally writing everything together in the same room for the first time in years, the process of bringing The Change Is Me  to life was captured by Diana Lungu in their latest documentary, Now I Know You See Me , out December 3rd, 2025. The Change Is Me  marks the beginning of DOODSESKADER’s shift into a more positive era, both musically and conceptually. Over the course of the 40-minute record we hear the two friends unite in a fight against a world that grows more and more disappointing, a concept made crystal clear in tracks like “Celebrity Culture Simp Farm”, “It Keeps On Stinging”, and of course the album’s epic closer “Suffering In Technicolor”. While their previous albums saw them trying to outrun their pasts and arrive at a better version of themselves, here the search for some external or internal revelation that will “make them better” is no more. It’s been replaced by the realization that change isn’t something we force: it’s gradual, and more importantly, it’s something that’s already there – we just need to reach out and accept it.The band’s live appearances over the last several years have been instrumental in shaping their ideology. On stage is where the duo find connection; not only with the audience, but also with each other. Their sold-out release shows at Ancienne Belgique (2022) and VierNulVier (2024) have proven that they are one of Belgium’s must-see acts. Abroad, their energy has translated into a month-long EU/UK tour with French band Alcest in 2024, as well as appearances at festivals such as Roadburn Festival (NL), Eurosonic (NL), Hellfest (FR), Mystic Fest (PL), Jera On Air (NL), ArcTanGent (UK), Fluff Fest (CZ) and more. Pyo Deze band die het voorprogramma mocht verzorgen is het project van de Brusselse muzikant Karel Piot, die ook dit jaar in De Nieuwe Lichting 2026 aanwezig was. Hij brengt een mix van moderne post-punk en new wave van de jaren '80. Zijn muziek bracht hen reeds optredens tot in Zuid-Korea. The Haunted Youth In zaal de Zwerver stond The Haunted Youth op het podium voor hun try-out voor de release van hun nieuw album 'Boys Cry Too' en wauw... wat een avond. De nieuwe songs kwamen meteen binnen en klonken rauwer en zelfverzekerder. De dromerige melancholie blijft, maar in de nieuwe songs klinken de gitaren rauwer en duwt de bas nog meer. Het voelt alsof Joachim en co meer lef durven tonen. Na de intro werd gestart met 'In My Head' gevolgd door nog tien nummers, die duidelijk in de smaak vielen. Het belooft een succesvol album. Na hun nieuwe muziek volgden, na een kleine intro de hits, zoals 'I Feel Like Shit & I Wanna Die', 'Teen Rebel, 'Broken', 'Coming Home'. Iedereen had duidelijk genoten van hun nieuwe muziek en de ouder hits. Blij dat we er ook bij mochten zijn. Met deze set trekken ze binnenkort Europa in. Ook zijn ze dit jaar ook al te volgen in België o.a. in het Koninklijk Circus (3x), Werchter en op Cactusfestival. HELL ON AIR THRASH AANKONDIGING In ware old-school stijl slaat de chaos toe wanneer het wil. ASSASSIN kan dit jaar helaas niet op Hell On Air spelen, maar de thrashgoden laten nooit een leegte ongevuld. Uit het Duitse hartland van staal en rook rijst een nieuwe kracht op. Een band gesmeed in '86, geslepen door decennia van riffs, zweet en pure agressie. Een band die de oude vlam zonder compromissen draagt. MELT-BANANA is een experimentele band uit Tokyo, Japan, bekend om een intense sound met complexe structuren en arrangementen. Door de jaren heen brachten ze talloze singles en samplerbijdragen uit, naast “12½ albums”, en speelden ze concerten over de hele wereld. MELT-BANANA werkte samen met uiteenlopende artiesten, waaronder John Zorn, Tool, Mike Patton, Fantomas, Wire, Underworld, Melvins en Lou Reed. De band bestaat uit Yasuko Onuki (“Yako”) en gitarist Ichiro Agata (“Agata”), wiens gitaargeluid omschreven wordt als een batterij van turntables, synths en samplers. Ooit gestart als vierkoppige band in de jaren ’90, is MELT-BANANA nu een duo dat live werkt met PC en samples. In 2024 verscheen het album 3+5; na tours door UK en USA keren ze in 2026 terug naar Europa. Support: UITZENDBUREAU is een luide, achtarmige hardcoreband uit Amsterdam: een brutale explosie van energie en hc punk van NL’se bodem.
